Hey everyone, been missing the cafe so thought I’d just post one for today. Hope everyone is having a nice day, and also - Happy March!

Today’s theme is birds. I have some bird pics that you can feel free to pick a “fave” of if you want, and also some questions. As always, no pressure to do any of these things if you prefer not to ;) Feel free to talk about how your day is going or any other fairly light-hearted kinds of things. Ok, here’s the questions now :)

1. Do you like birds?
2. If you like birds, what is one of your fave kinds of birds?
3. Have you ever had a bird as a pet?

Some tags: @Witty_Sarcasm @Baywasp @KM76710 @FFurry @Angie @cymbele @Inastorm @Lane

(Will post bird pics in a reply) ;)

Ok, now my replies to the questions ;)

1. Do you like birds?
Yes, I love them!

2. If you like birds, what is one of your fave kinds of birds?
Really hard to pick in a way, but I pick owls.

3. Have you ever had a bird as a pet?

No, that would be cool but have only lived in apartments as an adult so that would be challenging. I don’t really like the idea of birds being stuck in a cage like that anyway, I prefer for them all to be able to just fly free instead ☮️ 🕊 ❤️ 😊

1. Do you like birds?

Sort of. I've read a book about evolution and birds are referenced a lot around the ideas of sexual selection and the traits of birds that evolve with it. That's very interesting.

There are a lot of birds around where I live that are very cute and chubby. There was once this bird I saw that was pure gold-colored and yellow and I would have take a picture if he didn't flew away.

2. If you like birds, what is one of your fave kinds of birds?

I think I like owls.

When I was a kid, we used to play around the block until dark and people said that there were owls living in some of the holes on the roof of some of the apartment blocks we hang around.

People said that they took entire eyes of kids what approached then with their beaks, and I was afraid of staying in very dark places where I figured out that owls stayed most of the time.

But I still wanted to see them in the dark cooing out and perched on some barbed wire.

I identify a lot with owls.

3. Have you ever had a bird as a pet?

Nope. I don't know why.

Most of the pet birds here are raised inside of bird cages. I don't think I would be happy raising a bird inside of a cage.

There is huge money to be made with birds around here (Brazil). We have all the exotic vibrant-colored birds here. Around where I live there is some shops that are specialized in selling all kinds of birds.

There are toucans and sky blue parrots and eagles around here but I never saw one in nature.

Illegal animal trafficking is a thing around here, and once I saw some news that each exotic bird brought to another country could be sold for some 3000$ (!) in the black market.

Thanks for opening @JMG
1. Do you like birds? I like birds but don't know much about them. I have a bird feeder but only attracts sparrows and brown boards. I was hoping for more variety.
2. If you like birds, what is one of your fave kinds of birds? I wish I had the picture my ex took of three owls in a tree in the dark at our cabin. I like mockingbirds and their sounds.
3. Have you ever had a bird as a pet?
Nope, Always had cats. Not that you can't have cats and birds, thought I'd protect the cat ( :) ).
next project after the butterfly houses is a bird feeder with a solar panel and camera. Got the electronics sorted out (I am an engineer) but have to build the feeder with a plastic box for the electronics. I could buy one from Amazon for $150+ but they have to be mounted to a house and that's what I am trying to avoid. I will post pictures when done.

@JMG You chose a cafe theme near to my heart. ☕️🥐🫖Thank you for opening a cafe and tagging me. I hope you are well, and that everyone on SF is doing well or will be better soon. You know what I mean.

1. Do you like birds? Yes.
2. If you like birds, what is one of your fave kinds of birds?
Two of my many favourites: the Northern Flicker here in the Northern hemisphere, and the Currawong in Australia. I have dozens of favourites, but I love them all.
3. Have you ever had a bird as a pet?
No. I strongly disagree with the idea of humans keeping them in cages. Though, I admit when I was in Australia I had a number of wild bird friends in the neighborhood. The local magpies never swooped me. lol

I have a bird for you guys

THEY ARE FREAKING GORGEOUS, OMFG.

Not every bird of paradise is the same, though. They all part of family named Paradisaeidae. There is even a type of plant which mimics them!

Its not a real case of mimicry though. Birds of paradise are from Oceania and this little baby above grows in Africa, so they evolved indenpendently. (very possibly a humming bird mimmicry case)

Although beautiful, my favorite bird have to be the Cassowary

I know, I know. It looks like a blue ostrich but this fella is the closest living thing we have from a velociraptor hahahahaha

Sorry for not sticking to the script

Heres an albatroz to make we all feel a little joy

Aw wow, such great replies, and pics! Gonna reply to the 5 kind people who have replied (thank you!) but no need to reply back to this, just wanting to acknowledge what you said ;)

SillyOldBear - Hummingbirds are so awesome, definitely my second fave. We hang a hummingbird feeder up for them every year on our balcony, I love seeing them when they stop by for a drink. That’s cool you have a couple birds as pets too :)

Fbr27 - That’s cool that you like owls too, freaky story about them though, wow! Ya I always try to be cautious around birds cos they may be small in size but with their talons and beaks they can do a lot more damage than one might think. Sorry to hear about that black market thing, very upsetting for sure and hopefully they are cracking down on those doing that and discouraging it from continuing.

Cymbele - You’re welcome for the tag, no problem at all ;) That sounds cool about getting that solar panel bird feeder set up, never heard of or seen that so definitely curious to see the pics when it’s done :)

Seabird - You’re welcome for the tag. I’m doing pretty good today thanks, hope you’re well too. I never heard of a currawong bird before, I gotta look that up after.

Notjoaorauta - Thanks so much for replying, and also for posting all those beautiful and awesome pics, really nice! Also, welcome to SF :)

Thanks for the tag @JMG
I do like birds. When I was in a vocational-technical program for veterinary assisting years ago, we went to a bird rescue that took in people's abandoned parrots and stuff. I was really surprised that a few of my classmates were afraid of the birds. But the more I learned about some of their temperaments and the strength of their beaks, the more it made sense. But I still wasn't scared.

I have to pick two favorite birds. I've always been a big fan of pigeons. I think they're funny, and they're badass survivors in the city. It makes me a little sad that they used to be highly valued by humans but are now frequently reviled and ignored and have been abandoned. I feel like I need to have a more "interesting"/exotic pick too, and I think toucans are really cool.

I've never had a pet bird. I remember wanting a macaw when I was younger, but it's probably for the best that I never got one, considering how long they live. One of the third grade teachers at my elementary school had an African grey parrot, and she brought him to school a few times, which was fun.

1. Do you like birds?

I do, they are great, and fun to amateur watch.

2. If you like birds, what is one of your fave kinds of birds?

Kestrels are among the most beautiful of the little birds of prey, very beautiful and fun to see them around. Helping to keep down the mice in the area. One of the most interesting that shows up here is the loggerhead, a shrike. Shrikes are both a songbird and raptor at the same time, the butcherbird. At times I can see where they will have whatever they are going to eat insects and small critters stuck on plant thorns and barbed wire.

3. Have you ever had a bird as a pet?

Never but when I was a kid one of the neighbors we had decades ago had a pet myna bird that would go to squawking and you would get the idea the bird really could talk. :)

Thanks @JMG !
1. Do you like birds? Sure, loved birds as a kid, collected pictures and books, etc., and was a bird watcher for a bit afterwards... maybe because I also liked expensive binoculars and how these brought clarity to distant objects.
2. If you like birds, what is one of your fave kinds of birds? Ploving piper, or was it piping plover? 😂
3. Have you ever had a bird as a pet? No, but I bird-sat occasionally for people going on trips and whatnot 👍
