This place is just getting out of control... Who's running this place?!

I don't have anything to write but wanted to open the place soooo... I was thinking earlier about what I wanted to be when I "grew up" vs what became haha Let's try not to let this get way out off track here. What I really wanted to be when I was younger was:

What I actually became in real life?
'

But of adults:

What did you want to be when you "grew up" vs what you are now? Does anyone actually get to do what they always wanted to? Someone come and save me and tell me and tell me I still have a chance to be an astronaut.

Interesting poll.... well - I never got close to me "dream job" if that is what you want to call it- I intended to be a helicopter pilot -and took all tests and past all the tests and was all set to go to Warrant Officer Flight Training program- until the physical when found out I was colorblind and they said no... (but it did explain why art class and kindergarten were in fact the hardest class/grade...) .. But that was my dream job for about 4-5 months when 19 , then was impossible and never thought much about it since. Now I am on disability and I just dream about a job.... I really liked working and did a few different things and really liked all of them in the end- liked all of them far far more than I like doing more or less nothing. Took a few years before my self value was not completely wrapped up in my work or career, but now while not where I would choose to be, I am okay with where I am at.

@walkerbait95 I was told on a number of occasions by somebody they intended to kick my ass to the moon and back - so yes, apparently being an astronaut is possible without any training or experience if you have the right connections... Hold onto the dream :)

I never really knew what I wanted to do when I grew up. There was just too much to choose from that I could never make a decision.

A few of the careers I dreamt about are fighter pilot, journalist, international aid worker, nurse, florist, photographer, set designer... According to family history I even told one of my father's friends when I was about 8 that I wanted to be a Bunny Girl :p

In reality I ended up going off to nurse training and dropping out after a month to go to art school where I dropped out after a year. I ended up working as a window dresser for a fashion designer, traveling around the country making her shops look beautiful. It didn't fit in well with family life once I had kids so I started up an after school club at my kids school which went well so I opened another and then another. I've now got five clubs looking after over 150 children every day. It's the best job in the world :)

:) Luv ya Matt
D'you not have the keys?
Dream job as a kid, well I'm still a kid! So I dreamed of working with children with special needs and in the therapy field. I am teaching young children with difficulties at the moment, and to continue with my 'dream' I have to get down to studying. Studying is going to be difficult for me but I just need a BA. At the moment I'd study play therapy next for my masters, but long term I want to study other things.

Onto something else, if anyone knows how to write music I'd love to edit my last post and put it to music http://elizareasonstolive.com/the-stop-button/ (not for public, mind)

@JmpMster It's always so hard to find you without the "NY" for some reason. I just can't get it straight.
Anyway, since you don't work outside somewhere and that seems to bum you out, what about taking classes online in something you're just interested in. Seems to me I recall you've got a helluva lot of school behind you in something I can't recall (haha I'm not known for my memory) so you must be interested in learning. Or volunteer work that you could do whenever you feel up to it. I'm sure you've thought of these things, I guess. Just wondering aloud if there's something that would make you feel more productive and like part of the machine again.

I always say when if I make it as far as retiring that I could deliver flowers. Not a florist per se but just delivering. I'm not creative enough to DO them. But I think people like getting flowers and they'd always be happy to see you. Even if it's a sad occasion they'll still appreciate the thought that someone put into it and all that crap. I think it's a bitchin retiree job. (If it paid 3 or 4 times as much I'd go do it now :) )

You're finding your way just find, Inno. And you're doing a great job.
I used to take care of DD adults back in the day. Some that lived with me and others that I went out and took out and about to do things - go to museums, parks, swimming, bowling, teach them stuff. It was a cool job and I liked it. Pay was dog crap though so that sucked.

Hmm, well I've been writing and singing since I was very young, so I always wanted to do something with music and writing, and still do. Also have wanted to be a filmmaker since I hit my 20's...a kid compared to now. :P I work in market research and I like it...but I hope someday I can achieve my dreams, and that we all will.

I actually do some freelancing now for a few hours each week, and while I may not be "seen" much on here this place takes up lots of time just keeping things working and doing background things so unfortunately "extra time" or "bored" is not the issue at all. I just miss the purposefulness of getting up having a place to be at (besides doctor appointments), getting a pay check instead of a disability check, and actual responsibilities for something outside of my family to help keep my head focused on "doing" - cant really explain well - but just miss working outside the house a lot. Am not dumb enough to not realize that calling that one of my biggest problems does not make me exceptionally fortunate these days- and sure as hell would never have believed NOT working would be a bad thing all the years I was working 65+ hours a week.... I suffer the typical human trait of we all want the most whatever somebody or something else makes it so we cant have it... In my case that was running a relatively large business and feeling "important" as shallow as it I know it is...

I understand how that feels. Since the depression and anxiety really took hold last year I haven't been into any of our clubs. I just work behind the scenes now from home. I miss people - the interaction with the staff, children and their parents. I really hope one day I'll have the courage to walk back in there.

Feeling important isn't shallow, it's something we all need. To be valued for what we do, what we are. I don't know the story of how you started this site but I'm guessing you never thought it would get this big. SF provides a lifeline for thousands of people in desperate circumstances. That is a major achievement and one that makes you incredibly important and valued to so many, all over the world.

Hello cafe peeps.
I never really had a dream job in mind. Crap huh? I worked in retail for a long time and now work in an office which I much prefer.
If you ask me now what Iโ€™d like to be doing Iโ€™d say CSI officer or mechanic. Pretty different fields eh? But Iโ€™m too old to train for these things now.
I guess I missed the boat.

I don't doubt that. This place is a lot of juggling and talking behind the scenes, I know.

all the years I was working 65+ hours a week
I think I'd take the trade of blowing off 65 hours a week for trying to find stuff "with a purpose" to do now. This place is a "purpose", you know that or you wouldn't be doing it. And I'm pretty sure you're doing a whole lot of other stuff on the side too.

You're serving a lot of purpose in the world, eh. Be it here or at a place that pays you with a paycheck with lots of zeros, you're doing awesome things.

I'm the first vote to be doing close to what I wanted to do as a kid. I wanted to be a scientist (not that I had any idea what that meant) and ended up an engineer. Although with the stress of what I do now I would give it up. But it is a paycheck...

I am still in college and not sure what I will end up doing when I'm done... currently want to be a psychology researcher, but I know I will have to go to grad school to do that, and my mental health has helped me screw up my GPA pretty badly :/ I need to talk to my advisor to see if he has any suggestions on how to begin planning for what to do after I graduate which will hopefully be this December. When I was a kid I remember wanting to be a musician, actor, artist, and chef, even though I wasn't too great at some of those things. Pretty sure I won't end up in any of those fields.

At one time I wanted "to be Jane Pauly." The closest I got was being a print journalist. I'm glad I never achieved fame because I think it would have destroyed my life. I've had half a dozen different jobs and careers and I've enjoyed them all. It's kept my life interesting.
