In the early 1700s my great, great (insert the appropriate amount of greats here) Grandfather had the surname Taylor in Yorkshire, where he was then press-ganged into the Navy. Unhappy with the navy he eventually escaped to South Africa and ending up in Mosselbay, married a woman, and took her surname, my current surname. That is how our family name changed.
Then after a good couple of years, he and his wife returned to Yorkshire, but his ancestors keep coming back here, and that is how I came to be born in South Africa.
That's a great story! :)
Sorry, I wrote too much *hiding
Nooo, thanks for taking the time to answer, and for all the book recommendations. *stars
Or do chores half naked in the cold so you get it done. Yup.
Wait what :D Have you tried that?

So for those of you who are liking my post asking to see a picture of my friend, I don't want to share it here on the forum.

However, I would be happy to PM you and I will send you the photo.

Tysm for tagging me here @Auri & for opening the cafe today! :)

Not up to a heck of a lot today, got my chores done yesterday I'm glad to say (after putting them off for like 3 days lol bad I know) so today probably just gonna relax by doing some things on here and reading.

Lol about a "menu" for the cafe, I like that idea! A perfect menu for me would have eggs benedict, samosas, chinese food (esp. egg rolls, wonton soup, chow mein and lemon chicken, yum!), fish n chips, tacos, cupcakes, pecan tarts and pie, ice cream, lots of diff. kinds of cookies and chocolate.
The drinks (if I could drink anything I wanted) would be root beer, cream soda, grape crush, ginger ale, and orange juice.

My father was a Star Wars fan and he wanted to name me Spock
Hey not to be a corrector here but I think this might have been meant to say "Star Trek" am I right? Lol ;)
Sorry to hear about your kitty too :( We also had to put down our sweet, special lil kitty, it was in 2019.

Ok here's my answers to the q's now :)

(1) Read Across America Day : What's a book you'd recommend? What are you reading right now?

I've also read that ****** Hay book @Lane it's excellent for sure, she's a great author & what she wrote really helped me a lot too. I also have her book of affirmations called "Power Thoughts" I highly recommend it, it has 365 affirmations in it and they have helped me a lot over the years as well.
I'd recommend that ****** Hay book as well, or "The Untethered Soul" because they are both books that have helped me a lot. In terms of fiction (since those are both non-fiction books lol) I recommend Harry Potter ;) :)
I just finished reading a mystery called "No Mercy" it was good, kinda had an abrupt ending though so now I'm kinda hoping there'll be another one. I'll be starting on another mystery when I have a chance to do more reading later. Ya I read a lot for sure lol.

(2) Old Stuff Day : Anything that's been gathering dust that you need to get rid of? Why do you keep it? Will you keep it after answering this question? Any old but significant belongings?
Not really I don't think. Just don't have the room. Have had to do lots of decluttering over the years (have moved close to 20 times in total from the time I was a 6 year old til now) so it's encouraged me to not have lots of things I don't need or use. It helps that I've mostly always lived in apartments instead of houses. Only lived in 4 houses in my lifetime, aside from that it's always been apts or townhouses. Lots of old, significant things sure, think that does tend to happen with people the older they get. I still have a teddy bear from when I was a baby that my mom got me, along with various other things from when I was a kid and teen.
(3) Fun Facts About Names Day : What are your favourite names? I love names! If you're willing to share, what's the etymology behind yours? or a fun fact about your name?
Ohh so many!
Guys: Luke, Mark, Alex, Aaron, Andre, Antonio, Andre, Damien, Dante, Darren, David, Dominic, Elijah, Jack, Jake, Jared, Jasper, Joaquin, Travis and William
Girls: Adaline, Adalina, Adelina, Adeline, Adriana, Agatha, Alyssa, Amanda, Anastasia, Angel, Annabelle, Antonia, Ariana, Ariel, Asami, Aurelia, Aurora, Autumn ;), Ayane,
Belinda, Bella, Bella, Beyonce, Bianca,
Cassandra, Cecilia, Celeste, Celine, Chloe, Claire, Clara,
Daniella, Danielle, Elise, Ella, Hoshiko, Irina, Isabelle, Jade, Jane, Janine, Josephine, Julia, Julie, Juliet, Kala, Kanako, Kiana, Larissa, Lelise, Leslie,
Madeline, Mariko, Marina, Marissa, Masami, Michiko, Mika, Miki, Minako, Melinda, Miranda, Moriko,
Phoebe, Ramona, Savannah, Selena, Shiori, Shizuka, Sumiko, Tamiko,
Valerie, Vanessa, Vanna, Veronica, Vivian.
There's lots more I like but this list is already kinda long lol. This is one of the reasons I don't want any kids though cos I'd never be able to pick a bloody name for them, I admire all who have somehow been able to do that though ;)
Sorry but to give the "etymology" behind my name I'd have to reveal what it is & I'd rather not do that on the public forums.
(4) Women in Construction Week : I have no question about that, but I wanted to point it out cause it's awesome. :D
I agree I think it's awesome for sure! Any person can do any job they want to if they have the qualifications. Gender need not have any part in it at all. Didn't know the word meritocracy (Dante) so now I learned a new & cool word for the day, thanks, love it! :)
(5) Procrastination Week : Any advice for us all procrastinators? :D
Hmm. Tempted to post a demotivational poster I saw on procrastination years ago. Ok how about I just give the gist of what it said instead?
"Procrastination is like _______. In the beginning it feels good, but in the end you're just ______ yourself.
Maybe you can fill in those blanks, maybe you can't lol. ;)
Ok I guess that isn't really "advice" sorry. Others already put some good stuff for this I think, not sure what else I can add except that organization has always helped me a lot. And writing things down, making lists of what I need to do & the order I intend to do them in.
(6) Universal Human Beings Week : What's the most beautiful thing about humanity?
Omg! Lots of things! Can't believe there's anyone who would think there is "nothing" beautiful about our species. I know we have done some extremely horrific things, there's no denying that, but that hardly speaks for everyone. I think one of the most beautiful things is our capacity for love, caring, understanding, support and just the things we've been able to discover that have helped a lot of things be so much better. People helping or rescuing stray or trapped animals (look it up on youtube if you are curious to see it, very inspiring stuff!), things that allow children to see color for the first time, so many wonderful and awesome things have been invented by us, we're far from perfect but I think in a lot of ways that we definitely have huge potential to be very inspirational and great! :) If we want to be better, we have to do better and believe better, imo. It is absolutely possible. ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤
(7) Self-care Day : Okay, that's not true... but I needed a 7th one and I wanted you to do something positive for yourself today, so what is it you plan on doing? :) If you need ideas, it's also "Banana Cream Pie Day", "Read an E-book Week", "Write a Letter Appreciation Week" and "British Pie Week". Have fun!

Excellent & very positive idea @Auri I wholeheartedly support it! :) Every day should be Self-Care day imo ;) :)
Today I plan on staying positively focused on the things I'm grateful for, spreading messages of positivity and love rather than of negativity or hate, and of writing on the pre-stamped postcard I got in the mail yesterday. Will prob. send it to my sis & her husband (has to be someone within my own country only or I'd maybe try to send it to someone who lives alone), I'm looking forward to doing that and to her getting it and hopefully being happy about it :)

Damn, I love all your answers so much and I quoted so many parts :D Thanks for taking the time to answer and for spreading so much positivity, it's good to see. *hug

I think this is the ultimate proof that we can have very different tastes. I hate my name with a passion, and I don't want to say it either cause I don't feel like it represents me at all... but it is on your list. :D

"Procrastination is like _______. In the beginning it feels good, but in the end you're just ______ yourself.
Quotes can be helpful. ;) I like this one too!

I couldn't agree more... It takes a grateful and optimistic attitude to see it perhaps, but there's no better feeling in my opinion than seeing all those beautiful things, so it's worth it. :) (And I'm a pretty cynical individual by nature :p)

Today I plan on staying positively focused on the things I'm grateful for, spreading messages of positivity and love rather than of negativity or hate, and of writing on the pre-stamped postcard I got in the mail yesterday. I think those are excellent plans! *stars I love sending cards as well, makes at least two people a bit happier. :)

i see it is dr seuss’s birthday today. sadly i’ve heard some not so good things said about him lately but i’ll have to wait on that to understand the issues. in my life his writing always had some significance and validity and influence that i cannot reject.

now about that breakfast, pancakes? maple syrup? fresh fruits, coffee and more coffee please and bacon and.... please......

@Auri this café is terrific!!!

Thanks for opening @Auri and for the tag @Lane....

Wishing all a great Tuesday....

Books--haven't really read much of anything over the last few years for some reason...can't seem to find the time somehow alas...but love to read and so hope to schedule some time to start reading again...

Name-- Lynn comes from the Welsh Lake which seems appropriate as I'm a Pieces.. and also have to admit thought was very cool when I met Lynn Swan of the Steelers as my 4th grade English teacher was dating him and he drove a corvette...

Procrastination -- this has been my mantra my whole life I think...as always looked at finishing projects by all the possible hours not the reasonable hours ...e.g. I was an all-nighter through all of school

Old stuff...I am a hoarder by nature but admit having moved several times really does help with that and many many trips to the dump and filled bins... and after dealing with my father's house admit am more likely to throw out things rather than keep them... though clothes...always have this thought...well...I might be able to fit into them again...sigh....so yes have 2 closets full and at moment due to covid 20+ only wear about 20 things...thank god for leggings! ...sigh...

Women in Construction---good for them...as in all other "historically" male-dominated careers

Humanity---treating all with respect, civility, compassion and empathy

Self-care--guess lunchtime session with therapist would count today as had thought of cancelling it...

Hey @Auri thank you for the tag and opening the cafe. For some reason I'm hungry after logging off from these cafes. Hope everyone is having a good day/night.
1. Currently I'm not reading anything, but I have read Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand and would recommend.
2. I dont like mess or clutter so I toss/donate on a regular basis.
3. My kids names, they are all old fashioned and simple names.
4. That is cool.
5. Avoidance is highly underrated.
6. The majority of human beings will help even a stranger in need.

Ah, not too many people reading my kind of books on here :P I go for pure escapism, oh well. Since no one seems to have volunteered for tomorrow's Cafe, I think Ill give it a shot :D
I like escapism too, though I mostly go for Fantasy - ok, I DID go, cause I don't read anymore.

Thanks for volunteering!

So... what was your act of self-care today? *hug

You know I'm more for humorous Self-Destruction than honest Self-Care :D But I did get a VR for self care, I know its a way to trick me into moving around more.

Is that enough?
Ah, finally! :D Yes, no matter what it is, it's ok. Happy for you!

I know @Auri wanted to know what I bought today, so I'll post about it here.
I went to a thrift store and got a really nice shirt. It's sheer black and has rainbow shimmery stuff on it. I also got three books: Girl with a Pearl Earring, Safe Haven, and The Help. I have seen all of these movies but not read the books. I also got a pack of warm socks at another thrift store.
Then I went to another store that has really good deals on things. I got dresses for only 99 cents a piece. Some of the dresses were originally as much as $55 or maybe even more. I got a red dress, pink, flower, and black. I got pairs of pants for $2 each. So I got a pair of striped pants and 2 pairs of jeans. All of these clothes are brand new. I also got some chocolate and other treats.
