Welcome one and all to Jim's Café, the sanctuary for the long suffering sane from the madness of the modern world.

I have been rather absent lately, too busy I'm afraid, but one should never be too busy to drop a cafe every now and then SO WELCOME! As ever our cafe has a fine selection of entertainment, we have music, fun facts, and several tables to sit and enjoy a multitude of questions. Pick a table to answer or just answer them all ^^

Fun Facts:
1) Multiple studies have shown than singing in a group boosts your mood, there is even a noticeable release of neurochemicals like oxytocin and cortisol which reduce stress and elevate mood.
2) China produces more than half of the worlds pencils, over 10 billion a year, thats enough to circle the globe 40 times (and draw Earth's orbit to scale almost 600 times)
3) Researchers study kissing in a field of science called philematology. They've discovered two out of three people tilt their heads to the right when kissing.
4) The Busuu language is the least popular language currently spoken. At last count (2005) only 3 people spoke it.
5) A study showed that popular musicians have an average life expectancy 25 years lower than people outside the profession.

Earth's mean distance from sun = 149,420,000 km (1) making an orbital path approximately 939,000,000 km long (using 2*Pi*r to get circumference)

A single average pencil has enough lead to draw a line approximately 35m long before being used up. (2), this multiplied by 10 billion (number of pencils a year from China (3)) is 350,000,000,000 miles, which is 563,270,400,000 km

563,270,400,000 divided by 939,000,000 is 599.861980831 meaning those 10 billion pencils can draw earth's orbit to scale 599.86 times.

I love it...wish I had more of a variety.

I think it's rude when anyone borrows my stuff without asking. Unless it's a close friend or family member.

3) Do you prefer brand new stationary, or something you have owned and loved for a long time?
A little bit of both.

4) Do you have a favourite stationary?
Anything fun and colorful.

5) As a rough guess, how much of the stationary you buy goes tragically unused or underutilised?
It would get used because I like to write letters.

Definitely slow.

Depends how long I've gone without doing anything.

3) Are there any tasks you should do that you have neglected for an extended period of time? What are they?
Clean the toilet, mop the floors, just lots of cleaning.

4) If you had all the time in the world, what would you do with it?
Spend time with people I care about.

How would the world look if some of our most relied-upon tech failed us?

1) If the internet died and SF were forced to move to an in-person gathering, what kind of venue would you choose?
Something that's fun and lively.

2) If you had to do without heating/air conditioning for a while, how could you keep warm/cool?
Ice to keep cool, sweaters to keep warm.

3) If all phones and computers died and we had to rely on letters to communicate, how many do you think you would write a day or would you just not bother?
Probably a lot because I like to keep in touch with people.

4) Can you imagine rush hour traffic, but with horses, how do you think that would go? Paint us a word picture.
Like this, so you can imagine why stoplights were invented. lol

Maybe an 8, we'd still be able to figure it out but minimally. We could tell the days apart by sunrise and sunset.

1) How do you feel about stationary?
Love it, have lots of diff. kinds of pens, post it pads, scrapbook paper, letter paper, notebooks and some cool erasers too.

2) How do you respond when someone "borrows" your stationary without asking?
Don’t usually have that problem but if I did I would probably just let them know to please ask me first in the future.

3) Do you prefer brand new stationary, or something you have owned and loved for a long time?
Both are good, I guess it’s always fun when it’s brand new though,

4) Do you have a favourite stationary?
Anything fun, cute and colorful really.

5) As a rough guess, how much of the stationary you buy goes tragically unused or underutilised?
I think I probably have more than I’ll ever be able to use in my lifetime. I bought a jumbo ombré eraser at least a year or more ago and it has remained where I put it in the mini drawer thing it fits so perfectly in lol, unused but I bought it cos I like how it looks anyway :p

1) Are you usually quite busy or do you live a more slow paced existence?
Slow paced and I do my best to keep it that way, never had the energy or motivation to do the fast paced thing.

2) How long is your "to do" list?
Always have one but it’s not usually very long, try to only ever make short term ones that apply to the day, sometimes the week if I have important things I need to remember.

3) Are there any tasks you should do that you have neglected for an extended period of time? What are they?
Yes but sorry I’d rather not get into specific details of it.

4) If you had all the time in the world, what would you do with it?
Read, watch Star Wars, watch some shows on Netflix, help people, have deep, intellectual convos with people, see my sis as often as possible, cuddle with my sweet kitty, travel, and try to relax as much as I could.

Tech Disaster table:

1) If the internet died and SF were forced to move to an in-person gathering, what kind of venue would you choose?
Somewhere indoors, that had a section that was more open and spacious but that also had optional sections and rooms people could go to depending on the kind of interaction they wanted to have. There’d be lots of partitions to hide behind if people wanted to be able to talk without the stress of dealing with other peoples facial reactions. All the places to sit would be very comfortable and inviting. I’m really glad it’s here as an online space though, I like the anonymity of it.

2) If you had to do without heating/air conditioning for a while, how could you keep warm/cool?
Keeping cool is much harder when it’s hot imo but having ice cold drinks, cold face cloths, a bath for staying cool and lots of blankets and warm clothing for staying warm.

3) If all phones and computers died and we had to rely on letters to communicate, how many do you think you would write a day or would you just not bother?
Omg that would suck so bad I love how quick phone and email are but I probably wouldn’t do daily but weekly. Don’t have many people in my life would basically mainly be writing to maybe 3 people.

4) Can you imagine rush hour traffic, but with horses, how do you think that would go? Paint us a word picture.
I don’t know if I’m any good at painting word pictures sorry. Also with this particular scenario I think it could get quite gross lol. At best it would maybe give people a chance to talk while they’re waiting I guess.

5) On a scale of 1-10, if all clocks in the world stopped working, how screwed would society be?
8 cos we’d still be able to do things but a lot of the current systems would need to be redone. Hopefully that’ll never happen I like that clocks at least help us keep the days organized lol.

3) Do you prefer brand new stationary, or something you have owned and loved for a long time? Either one would suit me fine
4) Do you have a favourite stationary? None for me.
5) As a rough guess, how much of the stationary you buy goes tragically unused or underutilised? A lot with how humans are.

Life can be quite fast paced for some, how about you?
1) Are you usually quite busy or do you live a more slow paced existence? By far slow paced. One of the things I love about living in a rural area.
2) How long is your "to do" list? I think it has three or four things on it which I am slow enough to put off most of the time. LOL
3) Are there any tasks you should do that you have neglected for an extended period of time? What are they? Only one I think if getting the air conditioner fixed on my car, but it has been out for two years.
4) If you had all the time in the world, what would you do with it? Be even lazier than I am now. Probably read more, spent more of my remaining time enjoying the out of doors before I end up taking the big dirt nap.

1) If the internet died and SF were forced to move to an in-person gathering, what kind of venue would you choose? I would wish others to have fun but I am lazy and unmotivated enough to stay home taking a nap.
2) If you had to do without heating/air conditioning for a while, how could you keep warm/cool? If it is cold, bundle up enough to be comfortable. Have had to do that a few times. If it is hot open up the house and adjust to the heat.
3) If all phones and computers died and we had to rely on letters to communicate, how many do you think you would write a day or would you just not bother? Why bother for me.
4) Can you imagine rush hour traffic, but with horses, how do you think that would go? Paint us a word picture. It would be funny, plenty of new work for street sweepers shoveling horse crap nonstop.

I'll go with the stationary table, because it's a table that's not moving, which is generally a good thing as far as I'm concerned!

Where's the spelling police, or is it that stationary and stationery have become interchangeable? It wouldn't be the first time in my life. In high school, I distinctly recall "comprised of" being an egregious error and meriting an F on the test (zero strikes and you're out). However, "composed of" and "comprised of" have both become acceptable usage within my lifetime!

So, just in case I'm egregiously off base, I'll let stationary be stationery.

I used to love it as a child. Pens and pencils still excite me. Don't even get me started on pencil cases and holders.

I terminate with extreme prejudice. You can't touch a man's... um, stationery.
3) Do you prefer brand new stationary, or something you have owned and loved for a long time?
I love both.
4) Do you have a favourite stationary?
I love those designer or mechanical-drawing pencils that actually have a switchable indicator for the type of lead you put in. HB is the most popular by far, but there are various others available to the graphite connoisseur such as myself.
5) As a rough guess, how much of the stationary you buy goes tragically unused or underutilised?
Depends on what you mean by that word. Even if I don't use it for actual writing or drawing, I wouldn't use "underutilized" to refer to staring at it lovingly and appreciating it for many minutes at a time, especially prior to sleep.

I prefer brand new but then I don't want to spoil it by using it.

All of it. Pens, pencils, note books, files.

Most of it. It's too pretty to use.

My work is crazy busy so on my days off I try to take it slow.

I try not to have a to do list as I feel guilty when I do none of it lol.

Decorating. There are a few rooms in the house that could really do with some fresh paint.

Spend more time with people I love.

A beautiful tropical island with an amazing cocktail bar, chef, white sandy beaches and a spa.

Hugging for warmth, swimming in the sea to keep cool.
