My neighborhood, being a housing development near an elementary school in a city, dresses up and we get about 200 kids trick or treating. I used to dress up to hand out candy but the fun has gone out of it. It is supposed to be rainy this Halloween so maybe 150 kids instead.

One of the neat things is a nearby farm which accepts carved pumpkins and lights them up so it is a massive display of pumpkins. It is fun to go visit after trick or treating but maybe not this year if it is rainy.

I really don't believe in superstitions though.

Holy smokes that's alot of kids @cymbele. And a lot of candy farm sounds nice too. Thanks for sharing. Fall really is a nice time now that we're talking about it.

Dressing up? No! No way! that’s just for you humans. I come equipped with my own natural costume that adheres as necessary and Halloween is NOT one of those days. ok Just this one time.
As for my secret past? In college i once went to the Halloween event dressed as Santa Claus. I don’t remember anything else. then once as a kid, i rubbed charcoal all over my face to create that nice sunken in look. I put on my father’s jacket and drew my hands deep into the sleeves while holding bags of candy and sitting in a chair by the front door.

the lights were dimly lit and when to door bell rang by those trick or treaters one of my siblings opened the door slowly standing behind it so no one could see but there i sat slowly moving my hands out through the sleeves revealing the treats the adventurous trick or treaters had come for.

only problem is that they got so scared and screemed that my mother made stop the merriment and go back to a more traditional way of giving out the candy.

Ha, well technically it is TRICK or treat and you were offering both. Every year I threw a Halloween Birthday party for son. It became a custom and we had so many children.

They would hide behind cars and jump out out and scare the hell out of passing pedestrians, cars, etc.

The parents were drinking spiked cider, good times.

special? for what seems like many years we popped popcorn in the fireplace roasted marshmallows and my mother sang scary songs.

and superstitions. look at this! me mr spiritual supernatural space alien and i can’t think of a single thing atm. sorry!

Witches, pumpkin heads, black cats and scary spooks, black cats ohhhh its Halloween.

We don't really do anything special for Halloween now that our children have grown up but when they were small it was quite a big deal. Our road is the only road in the village with street lighting so everyone seems to come here. I'd always take the kids out trick or treating (or trickle treating as my daughter thought it was called) and then their friends would descend for a party.

Its quiet for me too now, but wow it used to be crazy with the costumes and hundreds of lbs of candy.

Hey, Cymbele, you reminded me when you said “farm”. we used to go october apple picking at an orchard which was farm like and they had the hey ride and the tracker ride and the maze and of course the apples and pumpkins and we, mom and dad and the two kids had a nice long ride and fun day at the apple picking. it actually came out of my own childhood days when we went cider drinking (the unfermented type) and freshly made donuts and coffee at a famous roadside stand. my father would buy gallons and let it ferment since it was fresh pressed and unpasteurized. i always associated these events with halloween. and then
i did the annual pumpkin carving in the family. made a few pretty nice jackolanterns i gotta admit. and then i’d take the seeds and fry them. much tastier than roasting i think and ate them until my mouth hated me. so thanks much for the memory cymbele. your pumpkin lighting event sounds pretty fun. lets hope for no rain!

Is anyone dressing up, or do you remember having a favorite or funny costume in the past? I can only remember going trick or treating a couple of times. I always dressed as a witch!

Did your family do anything special? We didn't really do much for Halloween when I was growing up. I can't ever remember doing pumpkin carving or decorating our house. My gran insisted she was a real life witch though. She had her broomstick on display at her home. Every year on Hallow's eve she'd go out flying to the secret witch meeting. Late at night when we were tucked up in bed, we'd hear gran knock on our windows as she flew past! Of course she never stuck around for us to actually see her lol.

Thinking about superstitions, what was one that you heard growing up? Or that you know of? Never open your umbrella indoors! And it's bad luck to see a single magpie.

I want to dress up, but not sure what I want to do. One year I was a vampire clown, I was the devil another time, so that was pretty funny. lol

We don't really do much, maybe just buy some treats that we can have at home.

Well one is breaking the mirror and having seven years of bad luck, but I'm not too worried since I already have bad luck. :P

No prob. not, I have at least 5 or more costumes though, it's a lot of fun to dress up in costumes that's for sure I love it a lot & if I were a popular person with lots of friends then I'd prob. go to a halloween party every year & wear one of them :p I wear a halloween nightgown though anyway.

Some of the ones I know of are just the more well known ones like black cats crossing your path being bad luck, not opening an umbrella inside, a mirror breaking being 7 years bad luck, I know there's a lot more but those are the only ones I can think of right now. Never heard of the 3 people making a bed being bad luck one lol gonna have to look up what made that one start, doesn't seem to make much sense to me at all though lol just sayin :p

The one my mom instilled in me was to Throw Salt Over Your Left Shoulder when you spill it. I don't know it's true origin but the most interesting I read is that in DiVinci's painting of the Last Supper, Judas appears to have spilled the salt. He then betrays Jesus, which led people to say that spilling the salt can bring about treachery and evil deeds. So to ward off bad omens or the devil, you should throw salt over your shoulder. I still do it out of habit to this day!

Good morning afternoon evening depending on your hemisphere

The most fun I had dressing up on Halloween was a super simple costume: I had these bouncey bee antenna, added yellow stripes to a black t shirt and went as a giant bee. Won the adult prize at the festival.

I loved Halloween as a child, of course it was a different time then and we children roamed all over town.

I used to throw salt over my left shoulder if I spilled some. You just reminded me of it. But I haven't in many years. I think it's been for so long because I habitually make sure I never spill any.

Thank you for the tag @Lane. I have used the same costume for decades, still having my denim maxi skirt and a halter top from the 1970's and my leather hair braid wraps.....so I remain a hippie for the holiday.....

When I was a kid and if ever we visited my mom's family we'd had a costume party and dressup. I remember once I was a zombie Hawaiian princess which was fun. Right now I've been really interested in FX makeup and have been meaning to get a kit bit issa expensiveeee I just soothe that hobby by watching Glam &Gore on YT (she's amazing)

Did your family do anything special?
We don't celebrate Halloween where we live (or most families don't) but we'll be traveling to Bangkok since it's our semestral break.

Thinking about superstitions, what was one that you heard growing up? Or that you know of?
Not much, my mom believed that lying to us and scaring us would do no good and just make us paranoid and scared. I'm not quite sure to be honest.
