What makes up a culture? Do you feel connected to yours? Why, why not?

I don't feel connected in the slightest to the culture here, I never have done. And over the last few years I've begun to actively despise it.

How do you deal with people who disagree with you?

If they're prepared to have a reasonable debate then I'll normally try to engage but if they're just being argumentative twats for the sake of it I'll walk away. Pick your battles.

Do you think regrets can be a good thing? Bad thing?

I think there's good and bad regrets. Sometimes we make poor choices and sometimes our choices seem good at the time but turn out bad down the line. Nothing we do can change the past and there's no point regretting things that we have no control over. But it can be hard not to wonder what would have happened if we'd done things differently.

what genre of movies and/or books do you especially like such as romance, horror, sci-fi, etc? What are you watching or reading lately?

I like pretty much all genres other than horror - I'm a total wuss when it comes to scary shit.

Being a Brit I tend to go more for savory pies - I find it almost impossible to turn down a steak & ale pie.
Sweet ones? Not so much although I remember having Key Lime Pie on holiday in Florida many years ago and it was amazing.
Whipped cream? It would taste weird on a steak & ale pie.

and we just finished hors d’oeuvres and cocktails! ...well, olives and cheese and chips and seltzer! so its actually already 6:43PMish.

let me get in to the Qs right away (but of course thank you for the tag and café. being here now is as good a time as any!).

1) What makes up a culture? Do you feel connected to yours? Why, why not? 👸👱‍♀️👳‍♂️🤵💂‍♀️ basically i’m russian. and also basically i’m jewish. so my culture is russian jewish. being a non-religious family and lots of russian orthodox influence too, we had a kind of mixed culture. celebrating the jewish holidays and celebrating christmas too. we had those little russian nesting dolls:
my mother also made some russian easter eggs:

then my parents were very interested in the arts and particularly ballet like the nutcracker. there was of course lots of jewish tradtion and lots of conflict too due to different ways of seeing things between my father and his cousins and even brothers. so while i see a culture depending on lots of tradition from both sides, language, religion etc, in my family it all became a lot of confusing mixed messages. i still think i understand culture yet not sure what mine is. so, i feel connected to the artistic parts and the music but not language or religion. i never had the opportunity to learn the languages of my ancestors via my parents. its a shame.


2) How do you deal with people who disagree with you? with some people who i know well, i probably could argue the point even quite emphatically. with total strangers, i’m often overwhelmed with embarrassment. i seldom get angry but when i do, i tend to feel stupid as a result.

3) Do you think regrets can be a good thing? Bad thing? i have regrets. plenty. the bad feeling is what it is! that won’t change and it makes sense to be that way. not good. not bad. the events themselves were pretty much bad i guess.

4) what genre of movies and/or books do you especially like such as romance, horror, sci-fi, etc? What are you watching or reading lately? not really watching any movies lately. just some tv - star treck, etc. i do like sci-fi. pretty much anything actually if it seems interesting to me. its hard to pinpoint what makes it get my attention. as for books, i’m a horrible reader so i don’t read much. that’s a shame too.

as for pies my favorite is cherry then apple then pumpkin. i also like lemon merengue (a little, and some other custardy pudding type pies. pizza is pretty good too but of course in a class all its own.


i think of earl grey tea as being russian. i know it seems like russians everywhere love it. my grand father always had it and loved it and was know to have his like this:

During my walk I did see a Daddy Long Legs doing his best to get away from me. I hope your walk was very pleasant. I saw tons of dogs on mine.

the people were out today. i went through the usual park and then took the long way back. thats where i met the dandelion! lots of daddy long legs do their best to crawl all over me... 🌞

1) What makes up a culture? Do you feel connected to yours? Why, why not?

Mold. I am mold. Serious answer is culture is a mix of all parts of society and I have never felt a part of the world I live in. They exclude me which is probably a good thing and I don't much care to join. It would be interesting and different to at least be asked to be a part but I would have no idea how to do that.

Mainly I just ignore them.

Good and bad. Good in that you may learn to behave better. Bad if you can't move on into the future.

4) what genre of movies and/or books do you especially like such as romance, horror, sci-fi, etc? What are you watching or reading lately?

Books are mainly history, science and biography. Movies run the gamut with comedy, horror, sci-fi, crime and historical topping out. The same goes for TV.

Chocolate, syrup coconut, caramel, no ice cream or whipped cream.

History, ideologies, principles, laws, environment (what food was/is available), tradition. I'm not really sure what my culture is (American?). I think American culture is quite lost and fragmented. If so, then yes. Lol. Nah, I don't feel connected to my culture.

2) How do you deal with people who disagree with you?
Depends on the situation. Normally, I'll try to confront anyone I disagree with with a counterpoint. I usually avoid trolls or the highly uneducated. If I discover they are either while in the debate, I just stop responding. If insults or outrageous claims go flying, I'll point out why this is illogical, but if they continue their behavior, it's not worth it so I stop responding.

In situations where debate doesn't belong, I try to mediate and focus on the task/ person that is important.

I don't have a problem disagreeing with friends/relatives but depending on the person, I may be more diplomatic than with a stranger.

3) Do you think regrets can be a good thing? Bad thing? Hm. Regrets are natural but dwelling on them to the point that you live in the past is a bad thing. I think they're only good when they inform how you choose to act in the future.


4) what genre of movies and/or books do you especially like such as romance, horror, sci-fi, etc? What are you watching or reading lately?

All sorts. I love fantasy, fiction, literature and human interest though. Sci-fi for moves and tv shows is a must. Right now I am reading Freakanomics and just finished watching Gypsy - jury's still out on whether I would recommend it.

The shared premise that we're all in this together (even if cliche) and are there to help one another when needed.

Educate and convince, or agree to disagree.

3) Do you think regrets can be a good thing? Bad thing?
Bad thing if they're about something not under my control that I could not have changed or influenced much.

Swashbuckling modern-day adventure and exploits; and gritty detective stories.

That happens to be my favorite... no need for whipped cream when there's meringue. Then cherry, lemon and apple. Whipped cream on the side.
