I think you can get some money from the goverment for burial. How much and under what conditions a US State will pay for funeral services varies a lot. There are also variations by county. You might want to try calling your state's Department of Health, or the county coroner to see what your options are.

Direct cremation (no funeral service) can cost between $500-$1800 according to what I've researched.
