I think you're eight in that it's a good idea that if you do meet someone from the internet, to make sure that you have spoken on the phone beforehand (to somewhat suss them out), and to meet in a safe public place. Maybe let a friend know where you're going. One of my friends met her now-partner in a public cafe, and actually asked her best friend to also be in the same cafe, at another table, "just in case".
