oh i could never do phone. that's so scary. in the past reaching out has only ever made things worse, which is why i'm so scared to do it now, even here, where everyone seems so nice...

There should be a bar at the bottom of the page that looks like this:

See bottom right of page. There should be a button thats says chat rooms. There are two rooms. One for more serious talk the other more casual. @maeday

This is a good place to make fine online friends. Any time I am on you can always post back and forth with me or start a conversation. To start a private conversation you just hover your cursor over a profile and should see a profile of the person. The bottom three options are click boxes to follow a person, ignore or start a conversation sending messages back and forth with folks.

i only see the two options, there's no start conversation option for you...but thank you for telling me how to do that in such a direct way. i need things to be very simple.

I just started a conversation with you. Hopefully it will go through and you will see it. Along the top banner where you have the tabs for Home, Forum, What's New, Resources on the right side you will have your profile with your ID and avatar image, Inbox(this is where a conversation will appear), Alerts and Search, if you received the conversation with stay in Inbox and you should be able to message through there anytime.

An additional help is that if someone offer to chat with you and you can't find "Start Conversation" so many will be willing as they indicate and just let them know that you can't start the conversation and ask them to and they should be able to bring one up. People here are helpful and supportive and I can imagine many willing to interact with you as they can.
