A discussion earlier touched on something I’m sensitive about so I felt it a bit deeper.

How much you get in disability benefits is based on how much you’ve paid in. It’s most similar to a mandatory insurance policy.

Receiving disability is no more “living off the taxpayer” than having your insurance pay a medical bill is “living off the insurance company.”

It is your money. You paid so that it would be there if you needed it.

If a casino pays out on a good bet, is it an act of charity? How is this different?

Keep in mind that if you did not pay into disability, you are ineligible for it.

That’s leaving aside how I feel about gov’t benefits in the first place. I have been on those as well, at certain times. I don’t think they should be a source of shame or ill-feeling, just making the point that one is not the other. I know what kind of country I want to live in, and that’s one that takes care of its people.
ssdi and retirement are benefits that are earned and you're right you have to pay into it enough to be eligible and how much you get depends on how much you put into it. i was on ssdi and it was earned not a charity. retirement is self explanatory but ssdi ( social security disability insurance ) is just that, insurance. it should stay mandatory and everyone should pay into it. of course once you reach full retirement age they switch you over. a lot of people confuse ssi which you don't need to pay into and ssdi which is insurance we pay into

Some might think it’s dumb or unnecessary that I make the distinction, and I don't entirely disagree with them, but it’s a point of pride to me that I don’t cost anyone money.

And I have little besides my pride, and little enough of that.

(Related to something else I’ve been talking about elsewhere) I may not be a provider, but at least I’m independent.

Somebody tried to make the point that I’m dependent on taxpayers, I don’t think that is the case here. I mean, I guess it can be said that I’m dependent on the gov’t the way someone is dependent on their employer: they’d be fucked if it disappeared. But the money they live off of is their own.

Maybe it’s dumb that that matters to me. Probably. But the difference does largely take away people’s ability to criticize how I live my life.

i agree completely. i have made that distinction to people a few times. if someone needs help from the government like food stamps or ssi , or from private charities like food banks i think it's ok and people shouldn't feel bad about it. as long as they don't abuse the system of course. we can't abuse the system because we get what we paid for. there was no difference between my ssdi check and a settlement from an insurance company from an accident

Yeah, I mean, I’m open about the fact that I’ve used assistance programs (“charity”) because I don’t want to come across like I’m “above” that or something.

I want to live in a society where such things exist for those who need them. I think funding them should be a bigger priority, be they private or tax-funded, so they can help more.

But, having lived off both, it matters to me that I no longer need that. It feels good, and the distinction matters.

Dealing with some difficult people at work lately. E.g. someone asked for a cold bottle of water since it was pretty hot and the ones we had sitting out weren't that cold, so I went and got her one. Then this other lady started going off like "why does nobody ever get me cold water" and complaining, but the thing is that she hadn't mentioned wanting cold water before that. As soon as she mentioned that she wanted it, I went and got it for her, but she'd started throwing a fit about not being given something when no one knew she wanted it.

I spent so long before my 30s ignoring my own feelings and actually trying to change them that I cant trace the cause of any emotion beyond the obvious. So every time something is really bothering me I have to play a guessing game with myself to try to figure out what. It means days of feeling tense or anxious or miserable until I figure out why and can finally fix it usually quite easily because it shouldn't have been a difficult problem. in the first place if I wasnt so useless at reading my own mental state.

Its like having no locational sense of pain, so every time you hurt yourself and feel pain you have to start poking and examining your whole body trying to understand what hurts.

She would not have liked my reply. What have you ever just gotten without being asked and given to anybody else? If you want others as a consideration to just do without being asked then you yourself need to do the same courtesy.

we ordered 2 ribeye steaks at walmart today with our order. usually they are good and should be for $19 bucks a pound. todays steaks were not trimmed well or at all, it had tough grizzle the whole length and some inside the steak. it wasn't well marbled so was tough for a ribeye.

i gave it 1 star it was so bad. so both steaks cost around $30 to $35 or so. we can't afford to waste money like that so my wife and i talked and if we get any steaks in the future she will go inside and hand pick them

At least some of my coworkers will listen, but not all of them.
I understand. I also understand that it can feel bad. But , we can't change people right ? I hope you try to make peace with it because let's be honest you wouldn't like to listen to everyone either right ? That doens't necessarily mean they have a problem , it just means you guys don't align and that's alright. Your worth is not dependant upon who listens to you. You are worthy but you very , and I mean this , very much deserve to be heard. I hope you find your people ❤️
