So a month from now I'm to have a colonoscopy done to finally get answers on my intestinal problems. There's just one problem-

-the GI doc also wants to do an endoscopy on the same day, presumably, because I've had GERD for so long. I really want the colonoscopy done so I can have answers, even though with my meager insurance it'll cost $1600. It's manageable. But if I have an endoscopy done at the same time and I have to pay a similar amount on top of the colonoscopy, then no it's not manageable. So I'm just hoping that the procedure is a combined one to come out to the amount I mentioned. Otherwise, I'll have no choice but to refuse the endoscopy. It's my right as a patient to refuse a procedure. But given that they are scheduled for the same day and at similar times, I don't know if I can refuse one procedure without refusing the other.

In short I'm at a loss.

Ask them. Your insurance should be able to answer the question on what is, or is not covered for the upper (or endo) & then I'd be willing to bet, if I had to make a hunch, that you could just get the one done. I believe, though I don't know for sure, that the reason for doing a "double," or both at once, is that they don't have to sedate you twice, or on two separate occasions. Ask the hospital or place where you are having the procedure done, and they can maybe explain if this is merely just for ease of convenience -- or simply to be more efficient, at it were, for lack of a better. But yes, people have just one scope or the other done all the time. So I'd ask, and hopefully, then receive the answers to my questions so as to alleviate this concern, and then be able to make my more reasoned decision beforehand.

In my experience...
Most Drs would rather do them both at the same time because it's easier on the body (and pocketbook for us).
It needs to be scheduled asap as it sometimes needs a different time slot, n you don't need to be waiting longer than necessary.

n yes... you can refuse one procedure and not the other... especially if it isn't covered. Or... the hospital/Dr office often works with you as a self pay and bring the price down... yet bill the main anesthesia for the other procedure... and also set up doable payments.

I had more in a message but when rereading your post, I see that your stated main concern is with the figure.
What I'm reading is that you're saying you have no idea whether this amount is for one procedure or for both. Whoever gave you the $1600 figure I'm thinking would have the answer to your question.

And is the $1600 you were quoted going towards an insurance deductible? If it is and fulfills your maximum out of pocket then there's that to look at. You have to know how your insurance coverage is structured, like possibly charging you 10%, 20% or some other amount after a deductible and out of pocket is met.

That's also a lot of procedure for many to be done in one go......apparently your ordering GI believes you can do both....

Best of luck to you with this....
