I have one thing that sets me off, interrupting me when Im talking. I was raised that its very rude. Someone very close to me does it a lot. Finally I lost it and told her what I thought. Her answer was interesting "You talk too much so I dont have a choice."
I really, really try not to do it, but my brain works too fast and sometimes I finish people's sentences for them. I think it's doing them a service at the time, insofar as I saved them the effort of spelling out the whole thing, but in hindsight I feel like I've been an A-hole.
I do know it's a problem, and I even appreciate it when someone I know says something to the effect of, "Goddammit would you just let me finish!!" That specific wording has only been once, but I really needed it. I would rather get direct, unvarnished feedback in real time rather than unwittingly have my audience getting increasingly irritated over time but not saying anything.
I know people say to just blow it off, not everything can be your fault...but when something is said over and over enough, even to ourselves, it eventually becomes the truth no matter what it is. Hell, its how social media works!
When you're struggling with something like suicide, there is no "Just" doing anything. It's like expecting someone with a broken leg to just walk it off, because that's how the involved normie dealt with their sprained ankle that one time. Unfortunately we have an invisible disability and not everyone can put themselves in our shoes for all sorts of different reasons.
* - mindful listening is really just stopping everything else you are doing and listening to the speaker with full attention, and no analysis or judgement. This can be powerful for relationship building, but yeah sometimes I need a verbal smack to the upside of the head - to remind me to listen as opposed to merely impatiently waiting for my turn to speak.
