Empathy Only The lousy day I had

This is nothing terrible, but I am just really down tonight because of the day I had.

Those of you who read this forum regularly know that I am always complaining about how much I hate my job. I still do.

About 2 weeks ago I was contacted by a recruiter about a contract-to-hire job. Very good pay, good match for my skills, and nearby. While I would rather move into a permanent position, I would be willing to go back to being a contractor for a few months if that's what it takes. So they submitted me for it. Last week the agency spent an hour coaching me on the interview. I spent more time prepping for it this weekend.

I had the interview yesterday on my lunch hour. It lasted 45 minutes and it went really well. At the end of it the hiring manager said they may want me to come back for an in person interview as soon as possible. So I was very happy, my hopes were up.

The recruiter called me at noon today and told me that the hiring manager was interested in bringing me on but that human resources at the company told him there was not going to be a permanent position and he could only bring me on as a contractor, and only for 6 months. So in 6 months I would be unemployed, no insurance, nothing. So I said no. I am very disappointed. I guess its better to find out ahead of time than after I've left my current job. But I can't believe the company wasn't up front about it.

After work I took my puppy to the dog park. Everything was great until we were ready to leave. Suddenly I heard my dog shrieking. A couple of huskies had him on his back and were attacking his throat. I started screaming "call your dogs" but nobody did anything. My puppy got away and came to me. He's a young dog, but he is over 50 lbs. By then I was yelling at the couple who owned the huskies and did nothing to call them off. I was really angry and kept asking for the guy's phone number. He and his female partner reacted like I was crazy. I wasn't at my best, but I had a bad day anyway and my dog has never been attacked. I told them next time I'm going to use pepper spray and he said he would be bringing a gun. Now I feel like I have to go to another park to avoid these aggressive dogs and their horrible owners.

I couldn't find any marks on him, but I'm not sure if he is ok. I will have to take a closer look when I calm down.

So now I am back at square one with the job hunting. I still hate my job. And I hate that the world is full of nasty, selfish people. I just want to sit and cry.

Yeah, I can see why you'd be disappointed. I guess it's better than if they only told you that after you worked there 5 months. I wouldn't be surprised if there were places that would stoop to that if they could get away with it.
he said he would be bringing a gun
That's crazy!
I'm not sure if he is ok
I hope he'll be alright

I know it doesn't mean much to say, but to that little puppy you were their savior. The world is full of nasty selfish people, no doubt, but there are kind ones too. You sound like one of them to be honest.

I can tell you really take good care of your dog. It's understandable to want cry when you've had a day where so much goes wrong. Just remember we're here for you.

Thank you for acknowledging that. I lost my last dog in June of last year, and got a puppy in October. He's the only family I have, and if something happened to him I don't know what I would do.

He is doing fine today, and I didn't find any puncture wounds on him. It was the shrieking that I just couldn't stand. There are many other dog parks, although this one is the closest. I guess I have to consider it carefully... I have had a lot of good experiences there too and I hate to let this person ruin it for us.

Very glad to hear that your dog is fine and not hurt. If you have others that you know using the same park that may be a suggestion, hang out more than one of you and kind of keep an eye on each other.

Yes that's a good idea. My dog has so much energy that its hard to keep him close - he just runs and runs. So I may have to leash him when I see dogs I'm not sure about or if I see these two dogs again. Clearly the owners don't care what they do.

I hope you are able to do that and it works for you, most dog people/animal people will have are likely to have a bit in common as well as a feeling for furry family and you can meet some new friends both two and four footed.

I decided that I shouldn't let this person and his partner keep me away from the dog park. I'm just trying to avoid that time of day (after work) and watch my dog more closely when we are leaving.

Another thing happened. I need to find a new dog daycare for my dog to go to while he is still un-neutered. So I've been talking to a man who runs his own daycare and yesterday we went to visit. I've known this person for almost 20 years, though not well.

So I went over there and we talked for about 45 minutes. He spent a lot of time telling me how his business was better than all the others. But recently he's been taking care of 15-20 dogs a day by himself.

He made friends with my dog, and it seemed to be going well. Then his own puppy started eating poop. He screamed at his dog and chased him up the stairs to the house. The dog yelped and sounded like he was being hit. My dog totally freaked out and ran after the puppy like he was going to protect him. He started barking at the guy and wouldn't back down. Clearly he was freaked out and afraid of him. And I was pretty freaked out too.

So I asked "You'd never do that to my dog would you?" He said no, but that that doesn't mean he won't do that to his own dog in front of my dog. And my dog was clearly traumatized. So I thought about it overnight and then I decided I couldn't take that kind of risk with my dog. I emailed him and told him. He said he didn't hit his dog. But clearly, by making his own dog afraid he also made my dog afraid.

I don't yell at my pup are hit him ever, even when I'm frustrated. And that takes some effort, because puppies are destructive. But I just don't want my dog to be afraid of people. And I can't believe someone who works with dogs professionally doesn't have a better way of training his dog than screaming at him.

I'm always so disgusted when I see people mistreating their pets. I don't even particularly like animals, but they don't do anything wrong, they just are. They are pure creatures following their instinct, and I know many people just take out their own frustrations on them. Finally a situation where they have power and control, and it's so easy to abuse, almost accepted even. Makes my blood boil.
