Mad as a sack of ferrets!

Just wondering how many of us have been bamboozled by the litany of diagnostic labels applied to us over the years? In fairness, I can't say it's been too bad for me, but I am conscious of it. And having previously worked in MH, I know of some patients that have more labels than they have teeth in their head!

Self diagnosed: depression (query bi-polar) and body dysmorphic disorder (once upon a time), then stress and anxiety.

Professionally: depression, possibly bi-polar type II, most recently treatment-resistant depression. Stress and anxiety confirmed. And now someone has thrown emotionally unstable PD traits into the mix, which I begrudgingly have to accept may be the case.

Hopefully, I think that's going to be it. But so many others have been far more unfortunate. And while we shouldn't get hung up on labels, for the sake of clarity, understanding ourselves and our conditions, it can be helpful just to know what the score is.

There is a city in West Yorkshire with an overwhelming prevalence of the lessor known condition "West Leeds bi-polar" because one of the most active consultants in the West of Leeds seems somewhat obsessed with diagnosing every patient with bi-polar disorder, because that's his special interest! And once upon a time I worked with a consultant who could have diagnosed a potato with a personality disorder given half the chance. He then issued every secondary diagnosis under the sun and had his patients on such a cocktail of drugs, they virtually rattled as the walked down the street. Other consultants just love to overturn one another's diagnosis in a way that seems to be based more upon professional arrogance than clinical judgement. That just seems wrong on every level.

I know by definition, mental health is a grey area. But at the same time the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and statistical manual) and ICD-10 (International Classification of Diseases) codes seem to give fairly prescriptive guidelines for diagnosis. But what the hell do I know? I'm just a patient.

What are other people's experience?

Dude it's been ridiculous. I wasn't even in the system until this year and they went berzerk. They were trying to pin me down as bipolar for like two months and the entire time I was like...guys...no...doesn't fit... But yeah 1st hospitalization, depression with psychotic features and anxiety, 2nd, OCPD, BPD, alexythimia, PTSD, interim, anorexia, potential bipolar (I am a lot of things but not bipolar), 3rd, they took back the bipolar, interim, doctor says none of it makes sense, 4th one doctor thought nothing was wrong with me and the other just knew something was wrong, said it was scary, didn't say what and I was like guys...you are the experts. You're reducing my faith in humanity. Then they made me take a written PD test and I ranked high for schizoid, OCPD and borderline and I was just like this...this is unproductive...how can I have overly emotional and underly emotional PDs at the same time? I don't have a degree but that just doesn't sound right.

So yeah. I can't imagine that all of those are right but it's what I have. Personally I think I just have CPTSD that has kinda branched out into weirder areas with the whole identity disturbance thing but my medical records disagree. So really my labels have only confused me more. The fact that my doctors kept changing bc I was just caught in the revolving door didn't help either. I was joking with my friend (who has anxiety and depression) and we were like we should make crazy people girl scouts where you get badges for your diagnoses and I was like I'd be the goddamn girl scout overlord and she was like you don't deserve half your badges we gonna revolt. But yeah that conversation was probably the most beneficial thing I got out of doctors trying to put me in boxes. I understand that diagnoses are necessary and helpful but like...they have to be right...

Oh god, that would make me dizzy. I get that it can take a while to firm up a diagnosis but that's ridiculous. I'd totally lose interest and disengage, assuming they haven't got a bloody clue.
I normally think google and medical encyclopaedias are dangerous territory because people start diagnosing themselves, but maybe they have a role to play when it comes to our MH. Most of us know ourselves better than any shrink ever could!
Hope you get there eventually! X
