What A Great Forum To Post My "Returning Post" In!

#1
It has been about two months since I last posted. So much has happened; but the short version is: I have been diagnosed with severe peripheral artery disease and have had emergency surgery to clear an arterial blockage. That arterial blockage affected blood flow to my right foot enough that my toes turned purple and blue (depending on the toe). I got an infection in my big toe, then gangrene set in. I've been hospitalized for three days (several weeks ago now) so that I was on 24-hour antibiotics and 24-hour blood thinners (and also a lot of heavy-duty pain killers).

I have a wound that won't heal on my big toe and have lost a big chunk of tissue at the end of it. It's supposed to eventually heal, but the dead and gone tissue is never coming back. I lost my right big toe nail as well. Quite literally, the last six weeks have been spent doing everything to avoid amputation of any toe, but especially the right big toe. So far, my body is winning the battle; even if I have lost some tissue and still have a lot of healing to do.

Suicidal thoughts. I think about death constantly because this is a "death sentence" meaning this is what will bring my death within a few years. I am at severe risk of a heart attack, stroke, or sudden death. I am doing everything I am supposed to at least stop the disease progression; it CAN BE reversed, but that takes over a year. And, yet, I can say since all of this happened, I do not have any active thoughts of taking my own Life prematurely. I'm not suddenly struck with "the glory of living"; rather, it is a solid realization that I have a date with Death at some point in the not too distant future, and I am very comfortable with that realization.

I like it that I have lots of time to take care of things. I am also acutely aware every day that I am living on borrowed time and each day could be my last. That knowledge really takes a lot of bullshit out of life's equation. It is somehow easier to live.

Anyway, this is my first post in a long while. I found this board late last year and it was a real lifesaver for me then. My health issues have kept me away. I'm still on the mend and will be for a long time, but I'm going to try and post more frequently.

Please take good care of yourself. :)

@RageAgainstTheDyingLight Wow, you have been through a lot, and continue to struggle. I am so sorry. What causes peripheral artery disease? Almost sounds like something diabetes could cause. I am very glad that you are getting treatments for it. I hope they ease the pain. You say it can be reversed, yet you also say it is a death sentence. So I gather reversed is not the same as cured. My understanding is that our toes are really important to our balance and ability to walk. How are you doing with that. Especially since it is not fully healed. I am really glad you are back, but wish you had better news.

PAD has hereditary and life-style factors. In my case, it's both.

I figure everyone dies of something. Sometimes we get advanced warning, sometimes not. I got some advance warning. I will do what I can to stop the progression, and hopefully reverse some of the damage too.

It's been a lot to take in.

That's been one of the most confounding aspects of all this: pain management. I am experiencing vascular pain -- there is no medication that addresses that kind of pain. I am already taking aspirin, which is actually the best pain medication for it.

The pain has been REALLY, REALLY intense for several weeks--like nothing I had ever experienced before. I don't want the heavy duty drugs (morphine; fentanyl; or such). They gave me those when I was hospitalized. Sure, it helped the pain; but the side effects (no memory; "out of it") aren't worth it to me. I've actually had to learn new pain management techniques. One of them is: I literally talk to the pain now. That alone has brought me to a whole new level of acceptance with it all, but, especially, dealing with the pain.

Anyway, so good to hear from you @Kiwi2016 . One Day At A Time.

Glad to hear from you again but sad because of the things you are going through. You are right about the everybody dies in their time, I am sad to hear how the physical side is going for you. The wasting away and all the problems is a fear that I have. No fear of death for myself since I came close a couple of times but the body falling apart part and what can go wrong with the complications is a concern especially being diabetic. Blindness is one of the only things I have a dose of scared of.

The inevitable deterioration of the physical body.

I try to accept that is the normal course of things. Our bodies break down.

I fear being unable to get around on my own. It's really hard some days, but I still can.

That I do understand. When my mom started to get older and less able to get around as well I moved in out here with her to help her get around. One of the things both my brother and I was pleased with with me being with her was she never had to go into a home and was able to stay in her house right up to the end. My brother and I were at her side when she died in her own bedroom.
