What is Catch The Bus really?

New to SF or any suicide forum, CTB kept popping up. What is it? Google answered the question of "what" but not the "why". Catching The Bus. Is this supposed to refer to getting out of "town"? Running away? "Taking the off-ramp", which I invented this minute, would actually be cool, because it has a pun (offing). Thanks in advance for explanations.

I believe, it is a "euphemism," for... 'committing suicide.' (don't worry, I never knew for the longest time, either--till someone, in fact told me! :^)

I first heard that term CTB years ago when I owned a typesetting business.
This fellow walked into my shop and asked if we would set the type for his magazine. I said yes. He said "you know this magazine is about gay people." I said yes I know, he nearly cried telling me all the other places he went turned him down. I did have one of my employees say he didn't want to work on the magazine. I just gave it to another who would work on it.

We learned a lot from that magazine. There were many instances where they referred to someone catching the bus. It definitely mean they committed suicide. This was back when AIDS was common also. It was sad to read, but very informative about the culture.

Oh yes, the employee who refused to work on the Magazine changed his mind and became aware of the true nature of Gay life. The more we learn about something the better off we are. Knowledge lessens fear and love destroys it. Love

I also picked up ctb from usenet. Yeah I am old, been on the internet since before social media. Anyway, it does refer to leaving. It’s a euphemism for sure, and it’s sort of an identifier between people who are aware of the topic of suicide and can discuss it without freaking out. I didn’t use it here until I saw other people using it. I use it interchangeably with the more modern abbreviation of “kms”.

Hi @LumberJack,

What does "kms" mean?

When I first came to SF, I didn't know what "ctb" meant either. I had to Google it find out it was internet slang for "commiting suicide." I read somewhere that the phrase apparently comes from the fact that getting hit by a speeding bus typically results in death.

the abbreviation for catch the bus is ctb, which is also an abbreviation for cease to breathe. cease to breathe -> ctb -> catch the bus, as like a double euphemism

While ctb refers to suicide, there is another expression which refers to both suicide and/or natural death, and the expression is called "pushing up daisies." I heard it during the 1960s, and I wonder if anyone else did.
