Ideas & Opinions What trends/crazes are you glad you didn't follow (Keep it light)?

Ones that come to mind:

1. Performative working hours - thankfully Covid somewhat stopped this.
2. Any kind of internet challenge - why?
3. Coffee pod machines - the machines are expensive, the pods are very expensive per kg,
tons of packaging forMcDonalds output.
4. Hipster burger/ fried chicken places - almost always overhyped and drinking out of a jar isn't fun.

This makes me think back to elementary school, about things that got so popular with a lot of the students that they even banned it sometimes. Some of them are simple stupid things, but I guess they got to be enough of a distraction. My one sixth grade teacher literally banned us from doing the "bendy pencil" illusion where you hold a pencil by the very end and shake it, and it looks like the pencil is rubbery/bending. It's hard to explain, but if I had an actual physical pencil to work with, I could make it clearer.
They also banned Pokemon cards for a while, when I was younger.
Neither of these was too big a deal, but it's just kind of funny to remember. I never bothered much with either thing; trying to fit in didn't usually go too well for me anyway.

I agree with all those things you posted, all annoying and impractical “trends” for sure.
I’m glad I never got into the Pokemon trend at all, and also just the whole “coffee drinking craze” at all either.

Coffee is a funny one in a way, cos I actually did try to make myself like it and get addicted to it, sad as that probably sounds. I thought it would be such an easy (and fairly inexpensive) way to bond a lot more with people “socially” so when they say something about “grabbing a coffee” I would actually feel some kind of “sincere joy” at the idea of drinking that. But ya, it just makes me nauseous, so I guess I must have a sensitive system (or maybe it is caffeine-specific, hard to say I guess).

Anyway those are the ones I can think of right now but pretty sure there’s some others too lol :p

Hey @IRE1992, liking the question. Thanks for opening and to @JMG for tagging me.

I'm gonna go with X, formerly known as Twitter. There was a time basically everyone was really active on Twitter, and i was going against the grain because i never really got the appeal. I had an account, but i barely touched it. And from the sound of it, since Musk took it over, it's turned into a bigoted dumpster fire i wouldn't touch with a 300 foot barge pole. I saw the writing on the wall and deleted my account the day the deal went through.

It's nice being able to openly declare i don't like X, and don't use it, and for most people to agree that's probably the smart call.

I can relate to this one actually. I like coffee, i have it black and unsweetened and everything. But tea doesn't agree with my system, so i can't drink it. In England. A country where people will start a multi-generational blood feud just because someone likes the wrong type of tea.

You’re so welcome for the tag @Lisa the Goatgirl And yes, I agree with what you said about Twitter/X (I think “X” is the dumbest name ever and it should be changed back to Twitter ffs, just saying lol), I also think that for people with a very active social life that maybe it’s a fun site, but for those who can post all kinds of cool/fun stuff and not even get any comments and/or likes on any of it, ya it is just kinda boring. I kinda posted a bit on there over a decade ago, but never really found it very “fun” and didn’t get very into it either.

Also, lol @ that meme, that show is funny. I gotta watch more of it whenever we renew our Netflix subscription again (it expired as of yesterday lol) :p I sure miss the days of all shows just being released on DVD, then I could either get it from the library, or if it wasn’t there then perhaps buy it. My friend loves that show too

Omg! We SO need to switch countries/continents, cos I love tea (mostly green and chamomile lol) but don’t drink coffee. In North America (yup, the whole continent as far as I can tell) to not drink coffee seems to usually be seen as “odd”. Sorry to hear tea doesn’t agree with your system though, that sucks. Seems to be the same problem as what I have (except for mine being “coffee” instead of tea of course, lol) :p

Oh, if you like the show and you haven't caught up, you definitely should, because the show's ended now, they've aired their final season. I'm not gonna spoil anything, but you can tell covid and civil unrest over BLM and ACAB took their toll. But it wrapped up in a pretty satisfactory way. I like the final note they went out on, giving us a look at how everyone's story concluded. And we got a cameo from John C. McGinley, who i absolutely adore.

That would be more or less every single trend or craze. I find it to be a complete turnoff when people are following something just because everyone else is. Even more so when I get folk banging on to urge me to join in. I prefer to judge shit on it's merits, not because some arsepipe is telling me it's what I should do because they say so. This could be anything from fashion, styles of food, social media platforms, tv shows, films. musical bands etc.

Lol, the reactions I got when I told people that no, I'm not on Facebook or Twitter or Whatsapp. (I have several personally valid reasons).
Likewise had friends telling me that I should get an iphone. - Why? How is it relevant to my needs?
Tv shows. For example Game of f#king Thrones. Had one person once incessantly going on about it and how I MUST watch it as it was the biggest thing at the time.... Man it was like being subjected to Japanese water torture. And how did that series end and what were the reaction of many viewers?
Music. The Beatles. Less just say I've never been a fan and even got kicked out of class at secondary school for disagreeing with the teacher's personal view that they were the best band of all time.

Like I said, I prefer to judge by the merits and not by whatever direction the crowd happens to be heading.

I feel there'd still be a debate to be had, but those sound like viable claims. But best band is so subjective, debating their opinion as if it were objective fact is just idiotic.

Besides, i think the Rolling Stones were better.

This teacher had major issues as no doubt you can tell. What made the situation more ridiculous was that she was actually a music teacher. I remember that particular lesson so well. Majority of it was spent her playing Eleanor Rigby on the record player, stopping the playback after more or less every line that was sung so as to disect the meaning and then restarting again. Positively did my head in.
True, Rolling Stones were far better. As were The Who. I also made a case for the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, The Clash, John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers amongst others for being right up there. But this teacher was blind drunk with her skewered beliefs and just couldn't accept a different opinion to hers.

Best thing that ever happened was being kicked out of that class in so far as that I didn't have to put up listening to any more of her bollocks lol.

I never like the Beatles, or Elvis. Don't like social media. Closed my Facebook account. Only social media I use is SF. I prefer snail mail to email. Email, and computers in general, are to easily hacked. I would prefer a world without personal computers. Definitely do not have a smart phone. My flip does just fine for me. Of course, the world may eventually force me to change that.
Went to grocery store today. They have an older man working as clerk right now. Don't know how long he will last. He struggles a lot with computerized system. Was so much easier when you just used cash.

I don't understand a lot of the viral trends, like why would I want to put pink sauce on my food? Why would anyone eat a Tide pod as a challenge? I don't like the way Crocs look, no offense to anyone who likes them. They just aren't my cup of tea. One thing I did like as a kid was wearing jelly shoes, but I wish they were more comfortable. Another thing is people caring too much about what kind of phone you have. Yes, mine is a $30 a month pay as you go type, but it works just fine for me. We all don't have thousands of dollars of disposable income to shell out for top of the line technology.

TikTok, Instagram, Crocs, although I did Birkenstocks in the 70's when they first came out before anyone really knew about them, calf length pants, extremely mixing shoe colors with clothing, gyms, Tommy Hilfiger, huge wall size televisions. Kardashians. And I never have drank? drunk? coffee either, never liked the taste or the response. Can't think of anymore at the moment....

I did try to get into the pet rock one back in the 1970s, No, NOT getting them for myself, I tried to sell stray pet rocks from the driveway and nobody would buy them...they just looked at me like I had lost my mind. That argument Xheads make that it's "deadnaming" a website is so daft, innit? Especially when the thing Musk changed it to isn't just cringe (which it is), but also kind of impossible to use without causing misunderstandings.

Like, take the example of my post where i "deadnamed" X. I felt like i had to clarify i meant the social media site, cos otherwise, it could have read like i was saying "I'm gonna go with [INSERT TREND HERE]", because in my experience, that's usually what people mean when they say something like "this is my opinion on X." It's a placeholder, because X is the most commonly used symbol in an algebraic equation.

And that's before you get onto the conversation that this isn't the creators of the site deciding to rename it. It's some rich manchild abusing his money to change the name of someone else's creation. And yeah, if a billionaire was able to buy the right to change one of my friends' names against their will, i'd "deadname" the hell out of them.
