What's wrong with taking a couple high-powered oil suits, dropping them down into the blackest depths, and stuffing them in the leaky oil hole?

Here is a possible projection of the oil flowing into the atlantic if they do not control this puncture. If this goes into the atlantic it is going to be huge. The gulf stream connects around the world, atleast right now it's maintained in the gulf(if you can call that maintained). If this gets out there, imagine the destruction it will do the the ecosystem. It will kill certain mammals, which others feed on or depend on to keep the ecosystem in check, which affects everything on this planet. Anyhow.. Just watch it to get an idea. They should seal off the gulf with netting and use the FUCKING navy.

Im sure obama will have another press realease at how furious he is at how BP is handeling this, and then he'll "talk" about taking command.

Why the hell didn't he take command of a national crisis in the first place?

Because Obama realises he knows fuck fucking all about the oil industry except how it fills the national coffers and could not infact do any better a job than BP.

A containment cap is collecting about one-third of the oil gushing daily from BP's damaged deepwater well in the Gulf of Mexico, the U.S. Coast Guard said Saturday.

Admiral Thad Allen said 6,000 barrels of oil (954,000 litres) were captured in a 24-hour period after the procedure began Friday, adding that engineers want to gradually raise that amount in the next few days by closing vents.

Oil is being allowed to escape from four vents to stop water from entering and forming hydrates that interfere with the procedure.

According to government estimates, the BP well has leaked 189.3 million litres of oil in the last six weeks.

NOAA monitors underwater oil plumes
Despite limited success with the containment cap, at least two massive oil plumes are fouling water under the surface, threatening deep-sea coral communities.

Research vessels will create a model to map the extent of the plumes, Allen told reporters at a news conference in Theodore, Ala.

Vessels from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration have been scouting an area near the oil rig that sank April 22, and more ships will return to test the water at different depths, he said.

"They’ll put together a profile, based on all the data, so we can understand what the picture looks like for the Gulf area in relation to what kind of hydrocarbons are present in the water column and come up with a general model of what’s going on in the Gulf," Allen said.

Tests conducted by scientists at the University of South Florida show one of the plumes is nearing a large underwater canyon whose currents fuel the food chain in Gulf waters off Florida.

On Friday, Ernst Peebles, a USF biological oceanographer and chief scientist aboard the Weatherbird II research vessel, said samples were drawn from two layers of oil. One measured 30 metres thick at a depth of about 400 metres.
It's believed the other layer is thicker, at a depth of 975 metres.

Obama promises cleanup effort 'on every front'
In his weekly radio and internet address, President Barack Obama said his administration has put in place the largest response to an environmental disaster in U.S. history.

He said the government had been "mobilized on every front," with more than 1,900 ships and 20,000 people helping clean up the spill.

Oil from the leak has reached the ecologically sensitive shores of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. Tar balls continued to wash ashore on the white-sand beaches of Pensacola, Fla., for a second day on Saturday.

"We want to disperse oil at the source," Allen said. "We're trying to limit, if at all possible, any dispersant application on the surface because we've used so much up there, more than was ever contemplated with a spill this size."

Officials have released just over a four million litres of chemicals in the water to disperse the oil.

"We've reached the million-gallon threshold on dispersants," Allen said.

"There's some public concern over the implication of dispersants," he said. "It's preferable to use a dispersant rather than have the oil because the toxicity is much less, but we are mindful that there are some toxic impacts of the dispersant.
"We're trying to focus it now on the subsea area where the oil is actually coming out of the wellhead."

A federal panel of about 50 experts is recommending the continued use of chemical dispersants to break up the oil, despite its harm to plankton, larvae and fish.

Panel member Ron Tjeerdema said Friday they decided the animals harmed by the chemicals underwater had a better chance of rebounding quickly than birds and mammals on the shoreline. Tjeerdema chairs the Department of Environmental Toxicology at the University of California, Davis

Defiantly progress in a very grim situation.

E nergy giant BP PLC seeks to double the amount of oil it captures from its ruptured Gulf of Mexico well, while the U.S. Gulf Coast will be struggling with the environmental mess from the huge spill for years, the Coast Guard said on Monday.

Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen said BP hoped to collect 20,000 barrels per day in its latest effort to contain the worst spill in U.S. history, which has now affected almost 200 kilometres of coastline.

The figure underscored some scientists' concerns that the May 27 government estimate of up to 19,000 barrels coming daily from the well 1,600 metres under the sea may be too low. BP had estimated the flow at 5,000 barrels a day.

Neither Allen nor BP gave an estimate of how much oil is still flowing into the Gulf.

bro theyre not trying to do anything though.. thats the thing they could stop it if they wanted to.. but this gives obama an excuse to raise taxes and screw the american ppl over by saying no more off shore drilling. others can drill there but we cant.. yeh.. ok .. thats not a money making scam. then he has the nerve to sit there and say how can we live like were living and expect europe to like us? i mean this guy is a disaster.. everyone got on bushes case for taking a couple of days to respond to katrina but this guy hasnt done jack in 45+ days. of course the media isnt going to show that. hes going around apologizing for us? he should be impeached! him and BP.. BP for failing to do his job, and obama for more than one count of treason.

well you could try them actually trying to come up with solutions from day 1 like they say instead of lieing about it and obama doing nothing but pointing fingers and blaming ppl. way to show leadership.
BP has been coming up with possible solutions since the beginning of this catastrophy. These are very unique circumstances, which require a more delicate thinking and planning. It defiantly takes them longer to create plans.

But still, you didn't really answer my question. Do you still believe they can stop this leak right now?

This could be the first important job for David Cameron, he needs to make sure Barack Obama does not act with too much anger and bitterness towards BP.

If the US rip BP apart then there will be a Pension crisis in Britain, there have been a lot of calls today from various leading political figures saying Obama needs to back off this offensive. Nothing from Cameron yet, which is wise at this stage but he must not appear weak in the long run.

Once this thing is plugged and out of the media hopefully Obama and his government calm down and we can sort this out in a way that does not severely damage the British and US economys.

David Cameron will discuss the Gulf of Mexico oil disaster with President Barack Obama

President Obama's criticisms of BP - and in particular its chief executive Tony Hayward - have been consistently blunt.

And some UK businessmen have accused the president's team of using "anti-British" language when discussing the spill.

But Liberal Democrat Energy Secretary Chris Huhne said he expected talks between the two men to be amicable and productive.

"It's in our joint interest to make sure that BP is able to go on functioning as an effective oil company, but first and foremost we have to deal with the environmental disaster," he said.

...
Our political reporter said the challenge for Mr Cameron, who had yet to meet President Obama since becoming prime minister, was preventing any suggestions of a rift with the White House, whilst being seen to support BP - a company identified by many as British.

BP employs 10,105 people in the UK and it is estimated that about 18 million people in the UK either own BP shares or pay into a pension fund that holds BP shares.

The company's shares finished up 7.2% on the London Stock Exchange on Friday, recovering losses suffered on Thursday.

Its share price has almost halved since the oil spill began.

Internation relations between The UK and America.

Anyhow this next part is aggrivating.
As much as 40,000 barrels (1.7m gallons) of oil a day may have been gushing from a blown-out well before it was capped on 3 June.

Source - Same as above
So BP originally stated 5k barrels. Then outside sources estimate went up to between 5-10k barrels. Then it jumped to almost 24k Barrels. Now they are estimating 40k barrels?

Are they seriously trying to change the figures so people give up with the figures they give? Or are they doing controlled release of figures because they have this semi capp? Or are they just truly understanding now what it could be.

Obviously this is an "Estimate" so yeah. But if you want to look at it in litres.. 1 Oil barrel is equal to 158.987 Litres. Soo how many days has it been 52? At the max of 40k Barrels each day(constant flow) it will have been 330 692 960 Litres has so far spilled into the gulf(minus the so many million they have captured since the capp). The governemnts estimate(not BP) was 189 million litres as of day 42(this is before the capp). That's only 28,304 Barrels a day. And again, before the Capp BP estimated 5-10k barrels a day, Max.

This has to be very difficult for disaster responce divisions.
