Dealing With Anger and Tolerance

#1
Hi, I'm posting this thread here because I'm one step away from getting my affairs in order, making a will, and attempting suicide again. I have no one else to talk too.

My main issue with life and people in it is that it seems that so many don't care about what should be important (being there for other people who need it) and instead choose to mentally 'check out' or ignore serious issues when others are counting on them to be there. They also continually enable bad behavior of those who continue to hurt others, I think because it's easier than dealing with it properly which requires courage and conflicting situations. Let me explain.

I used to be much worse at dealing with anger, but over the years have come to learn and practice a new word called 'tolerance' which means you don't necessarily approve of what's going on, you just tolerate it temporarily for a greater purpose. That said, I don't think there are some things in life that should ever be tolerated with good reason, because I can see how they directly hurt others deeply and I can't just let that go. Some of the things I can't tolerate are greed or self-preservation at the expense of others who have nothing to do with it and will suffer and die because of it. I also can't tolerate others living a lie or delusion and not only that, then they expect you to feed their delusion or bad behavior and I won't do that because I know the long-term damage it does. I also like to talk about and be honest with serious problems, but some just clam up and refuse to talk through issues and keep everything to themselves, which does not lead to anything good. Over the years this has made me cynical and indifferent to what happens, like "They don't care, what's the point?". It makes me feel useless, pointless existence just continuing to live some sick game that has no real purpose other than suffering. I just wish I could make some people see that if you just cared a little more about yourself and others around you in life, that it would make things better for everyone. Some people surprisingly wouldn't take that much to feel good again; a little financial help here, a little empathy there, just talk to them honestly, no games, no more hiding/pretending, make them feel remembered and appreciated, etc. yet they never receive it for whatever reason.

My sister who is in bad health just had her birthday yesterday and it may be her last so I decided to make it a good one, visiting her with gifts and making her feel appreciated, asking how she is and meaning it. I tried to get my parents to come there and it seems they have just mentally checked out. I already come from an abusive background with my father as seen in some of my other posts, and he has hardly been there for both my sister and me throughout the years to the point I don't really love him anymore. I've tried hard to make a relationship but I've given up being so frustrated by this attitude from him. Like it's so hard to come visit someone on their birthday or even pick up the phone. And I ask, "Why even be alive then if we're just going to ignore/resent each other and play this stupid game of let's pretend what's really happening?" But that's not just in my family, that attitude or outlook is in society in general. "Let's just keep ignoring everything; money, possessions, and superficial happiness is the most important."

The closer I get to the end I realize that money, possessions, and delusions mean nothing, it's what you did for others that matters the most, making a positive difference in any way you can. I'm thinking it's time to check out now, nobody cares anymore except some who I will probably never know in this lifetime who will soon join me too because no one helped them. And that makes me extremely sad, disappointed, and angry. It didn't have to be this way.

I"m sorry you're going through this.
There are people who care, but it can be difficult to find and connect with people like that. There are lots of people who care here on SF :)

In principle, I think there are some people who have trouble talking about deep issues just because they don't have any role models who have done that in their own lives. The notion may seem very alien, and dangerous particularly if they are used to a culture where vulnerabilities get attacked.

I know and it's appreciated. I was mostly talking about how people in society belittle mental illness and ignore those who need help when they could do something.

I was mostly talking about my family here. I have been that role model for the last 10 years speaking very openly and courageously about what I'm going through, and instead of taking the opportunity to open up themselves with my help, they ignored it and that hurts. I myself was not always open to talking, but with work and practice I got better at it. If I can change why can't they, what is their excuse? I've given them many opportunities.

What it comes down to may71 is that I need something else to live for besides my family, specifically my mother and sister who I've been avoiding going to suicide for for a long time, and it's not working anymore. It's not enough lately, I don't feel that the love I give them is equal to the love I receive back and that hurts. It's about priorities to me, while I'm empathetic to what they are going through they need to understand and care that I am on the edge of hurting myself right now and that needs to take top priority. There's a very good chance I'll try and do something soon. Please keep talking to me for now if you have time may71 or anyone else, it's appreciated.

There's an old cliche that you don't know what you've got until it's gone, and I think this a case of people don't care until someone actually completes suicide. And when it does, they are the first to say things like, "Why didn't they say anything?" It was because I couldn't, or you didn't take seriously the severity of the problem, or you ARE the problem. Right now they're probably thinking, "He's not really going to do it." Oh yes he will, and I've attempted in the past which should be a clear warning. And from a parent to child perspective, they should feel a sense of responsibility and instead I get responses of, "What do you want me to do about it?", or some other lame excuse of how they suffer changing the attention back to them. I'm not a parent, but I can't imagine ever treating my child like that, and I would NEVER turn away someone in that state because I know from experience what that is like and how horrible it is to be left on your own.

To quote a beautiful line from Sandy Duncan, "If you can't come to me with a serious family problem, then there is no family."

Dear Here Then Gone
You have written so much I relate to and agree with and can get confused by in others. And also at times when feeling acceptance of humans, not so confused…..it’s a harsh time for me in particular at the moment trying to not be sad and disappointed and angry with another’s arrogance and misplaced perceptions and I don’t know how to walk through this but today I’m going to give it heck…Especially with what is going on in my world now…this was a timely read for me. But this is not about me it’s about you and wanting to leave…
Please don’t give in to the superficiality of many individuals and the world with what all is happening and not controllable….

I keep repeating all day long when not doing yoga and meditation and chanting and having meditative music playing, walking, having any amount of DEEP
Conversation for even a few minutes in the day with one or even two or three people if I’m fortunate that show up as REAL, etc…and these words I say over and over: ……..presence, gratitude (for anything no matter what), compassion, trust, acceptance (self and others) and honesty (self and others) making myself feel something around these 6 words…..
I can’t go down the rabbit hole into suicide even though I am having ideation right now….
What a beautiful blessing you gave your sister🙏🏽
I had to give up what you described around your family and their strong lacks. I had to or I wouldn’t still be here.
There are people that care. I didn’t believe that 2 years ago. It can come into or back into your world
Hang in there. You did this week and you gave an huge and intense gift. That’s truly worth something

Thank you so much for reading and replying to my post JanisSPK. Just hearing one person who cares or others who liked what I wrote made a difference. I'm hanging on by threads right now, and I don't know how I'm going to be able to continue but it helped.

"I had to give up what you described around your family and their strong lacks. I had to or I wouldn’t still be here." I've decided to do this very thing, problem is there is a void and I don't know how to fill it with purpose.

I wake up this early in the morning and turn on my music and chanting and spend 10 or 15 or 20 minutes with what I have on , even 5 minutes also of just quiet and pranayama ( breathing) leave the music running quietly in the house the rest of the day. I light candle and sometimes incense or sage. I sit quietly and listen to a piece of teaching from one of several teachers and I take an easy early morning walk and drink my cup of tea Maybe feed the nearby turtles
It’s just how I am starting my day and easing into it giving myself a chance to either stay quiet or take care of any business for the day the rest of the time I am here or reading some kind of helpful book or being creative (garden) somehow or finding someone to be helpful to for a few minutes. Yardwork helps calm me as well
I’m glad you found something that soothed you for a moment. Leaving parents behind or changing your approach to them is not a quick thing most of the time ☮️
Small changes or even larger around family will eventually become easier and make things calmer in a persons life if it has to be done. YOU TAKE CARE OF YOU FIRST for awhile. I care and so do others here and probably there are some in your day to day life as well at some kind of level……☮️
