I thought rather than hijacking @Petal’s thread anymore I’d start a thread here dedicated to diabetes. I did a search and it didn’t come up with any old threads, so here it is.

I actually ended up having a hypo (low blood glucose) and god, those are horrible. Level is back to normal now though. I need to start figuring out how this continuous blood glucose monitoring system works

Since reading what you wrote over on the other thread, I don't think my symptoms are due to high sugar levels, so thanks for making me realise I should see my doctor. I'm still trying to eat a low carb diet, but my downfall is my addiction to chocolate, which I've managed to avoid indulging most of the time because it makes me feel really sick now. I still love it though and noticed you mentioned that you had some yourself and had to have insulin to bring your sugar level down. I'm wondering if you ever get that nausea feeling when your sugar level spikes.

The CGM with my new 670g pump and it has been amazing. My blood sugars have gone down and knowing that the Auto Feature will help with the blood sugars at night is another weight off my back. I highly recommend looking into it if you haven't yet.

Sherri Shafer is a dietician who works closely with diabetes management. Recently she has come out with a new book Diabetes and Carb Counting for Dummies as well as another one called Diabetes 2: Complete Food Management Program. You can also find her on youtube :).

@gypsylee I don't have diabetes, but still think a thread on it is a great idea. Why don't you pm Petal and ask her to stickie the post so it will remain at the top and easy to find.

Thanks for the support guys :) Diabetes is going to be pretty epidemic, so yeah.

@Flying Fox do you know of any good apps? I already use an app for recording my levels but I need one on nutrition and carb counting and stuff.

Do you have a continuous monitor?
Oh there’s more people ;)

@Lara_C You’re welcome. What about dark chocolate? I’ve managed to switch to that. There are also some good low carb/high protein chocolate bars but they cost a fortune.

@Walker Yes, yes I do! It’s still in the box..

Hope your diabetes goes well Gypsy :). Can't agree more - the number of people in the UK has increased and 1 in2 adults (I think) are over weight now.

As for apps I've heard good things about Go Meals, Diabetes in Check and Glucose Buddy. Calorie King is a good website visit for this type of stuff as well. Hope this helps!

Also, I have to just say — I hate insulin. I only took 6 units (with blood glucose at 22) and had a hypo  I don’t mind the long-acting one and take that every day, but the rapid really scares me.

Why aren't you using your continuous monitor?
Also, you're trippin about the bg readings but not using the monitor which would be making sure that you didn't drop (or get high) right? Sounds counterproductive... just saying :) What's freaking you out about that?

I thought of that but somebody told me you're only allowed one or two measley squares! :(
Haha! Not as a prediabetic.. Remember, your pancreas still works. Dark chocolate is actually good for you I think.

I just tested my level and it’s out of control today  Bring on the insulin pump (fake pancreas) I say.

No, it can’t actually do anything about the levels, that’s what an insulin pump does. But I don’t have a spare $10K for that.

Um.. Because.. I’m busy? :Do_O:rolleyes:

It's hard :( I had pre diabetes symptoms last year and had to totally change my diet, I keep carbs low now and try to eat plenty green veg, fish and olive oil. Apparently if you can get you body fat burning instead of sugar burning it will be a lot better, but its hard.

I believe I'm on the same model of the pump. I've yet to switch to Auto Mode with my trainer, but my blood-sugars have been outstanding with the pump and CGM alone (save for the incessant insulin suspensions and lows around bedtime). Considering your experience, I'm all the more eager for the final step.

One thing I found out is replacing ordinary starch with resistant starch. The body treats resistant starch like fibre so it doesn't add to the carb count. Apparently if you cool and reheat starchy foods like rice and pasta, you turn some of the starch to the resistant kind, and more so each time you cool and reheat. Works if you freeze stuff too - bread, mashed potatoes etc. Cornflakes are best cereal coz corn has more resistant starch.
