Exercise club

So I have a question for people.

I went biking like 10 days ago to go to farmer's market. I only made it about 20 min before I had to stop and walk my bike. My upper chest and front of neck hurt in this weird way. My teeth kind of hurt too. But it was like a dull pain. And I was not out of breath or seeming to have super high heart rate. I ended up walking bike until ride was all downhill rest of way.

Yesterday I went for a short hike up side of mountain range. But like I only could handle it on the very gentle slope, and started getting that same pain in neck and upper chest area. So I turned around. Only ended up going maybe a mile or less.

I was completely sedentary all of 2022, and started going to gym beginning of this year. My resting heart rate day one was 131, and within 6 weeks I had gotten it down to 99, but I haven't measured since maybe March.

Does anyone know what might be going on with my body? I hope I just need to keep exercising and get back in conditioning, but its an unusual symptom. In past years if I had been laying around all winter and started hiking in Spring, I might end up winded or feel I needed to rest, but it felt different. And right now it seems like I can't go very far before I'm halted by this.

When was the last time you got checked out by a medical professional? Please note, I'm only writing the following because you asked - and it's not what I know, it's just an opinion based on the available information.

I work in a medical field (though not a doctor!) and a couple of things concern me - the first is a resting heart rate of 131 - the MAX heart rate of a middle aged person will be about 170, anything over 85 for resting heart rate is worrying. The true resting heart rate is your heart rate when you are in bed, before you even move for the day. The symptoms do sound like stable angina. which can be caused by heart problems (heart not getting enough oxygen rich blood during exertion) I'm only saying this because you asked, but it's probably not wise to ask about such things on a forum - you'll ether get terrified, or reassured and forget about it, without necessarily having found the right answer at all. Even so angina is well managed by many many people with medications, it would be wise to see a medical professional if you can to either rule it out get the treatment that will help if need be, for whatever it is.
Like many things, the sooner checked out the better to prevent any further deterioration. And it may just be nothing

@AvidFan Yeah well I did get my resting heart rate down to 99, maybe lower since then. I haven't seen a GP in 5 years. I don't trust them and fear they always want to add medications instead of advocating lifestyle changes. So I'm wanting to get into better condition, like get resting heart rate down below 85 and up my VO2 capacity and such. But yeah maybe I need to go in for tests. I don't know.

Today I biked and didn't really get the symptom, which is good. I'm trying to get to point where I exercise every single day in one form or another. I was in much better shape before the pandemic. In 2019 I rode my bike all day once, with no signs of fatigue.

See how it goes, if it keeps happening then you know what you need to do. I commend you on your goal and wish you well with it! Maybe it's something and nothing and just your body creaking with unaccustomed exertion!

@seabird Actually what I've been thinking I'll do is take multiple breaks throughout day to go for short rides or walks. Like just 15 minutes around the block. So I'm not letting myself sit for hours at a time. I can also do longer rides or hikes here and there, but I'm aiming to get moving every day. I will be able to tell easily if I'm going further in time without getting fatigued.

I should say I was doing HIIT on treadmill about 5 times a week through January, when I was getting my resting heart rate down, and never had this symptom at all. Whatever that may mean.

@DouglasW I wonder about weird stuff like that - sometimes get hit with extreme fatigue on a hill that I was just fine on the last time I jogged it. Seems random, but maybe I get dehydrated and don't realize, or it's from lack of sleep.

This morning I did a 3 mile walk with a little jogging. The hills felt good if that makes sense. And a bonus was I saw the sun come up over the sea.

Just updating on the 10k race, which I did on Sunday, the atmosphere was great and it was a lovely day - for sitting in the shade! I woke up early enough and felt Ok but started to get a bit anxious as I had a bit of knee and hip soreness, but did my stretches and all was good. But it turned out it was the hottest day of the year so far in the Uk and there was just blazing sunshine. I set off at what I thought was a very slow and sensible pace and felt great - until about 4k when I started to warm up and feel very very hot. From that point it was a case of grit my teeth, I did walk a few times for a few minutes, I felt like I was in an oven and had to ration out the water bottle they gave between drinking the warm stuff and pouring it over me, it felt colder pouring it on my head and gave a bit of relief. The last 3k, with the great big ball of hydrogen in the sky blasting nuclear heat across everything, was possibly the most hellish experience I've ever had so I was glad to get over the finish line and happy to do so without actually falling in a heap.

I did fall in a heap later in the day, felt totally exhausted and fell asleep several times so went to bed. I'm just waking up, body feels ok but I still feel a bit weary. I will try to take it easy for a few days! The time was only a minute or so slower than last year, the last time I did it a lot quicker was 2017 when I lost a lot of weight and was running up mountains every day, I've slowed down a bit since then!

Well done @AvidFan . I can hardly imagine running 10k in that heat. (!#*+€<%$\!)
Seriously hope you re-hydrate yourself with water and electrolytes for a couple of days.

Thank you for telling us how it went. I was wondering about it today on my walk. The air was unusually smoky, which means there must be a bush fire nearby. :( Now I am sneezing from breathing in all the particulate for an hour & a half.

Again: congrats! :)
