What has helped for me is to enlist the help of your doctor or psychiatrist who has medical or psychiatric training in how to explain this to family members. Getting brochures that explain your diagnosis and give information on how to help you when you feel unwell can be helpful too. There are also online or telephone lines that carers can ring to get outisde help to try to understand or to ask further questions. Sometimes if you just write a list of the things you want your family or friends to understand about you and keep it simple as in dot points then give them the opportunity to ask you questions if you feel up to it. And if they need further information you could ask them if they would like to come with you to an appointment with you.
