Hello,
I am curious on some other peoples thoughts because I am certain many use self help books to success, some have probably tried and not had success and some have never read any.
I am constantly being recommended self help books from my dad. He thinks that they will help me greatly but at some point if you have never used them and have developed your own kind of "quirks" for a better word can these books still be helpful? I have been going to therapy since I was a kid and I can't really see a book helping or rather a book aimed just at helping. I enjoy reading a lot and I will grab thoughts here and there and apply them to help better myself but I have never been able to focus through a book that aims solely to help oneself as I don't think that any one person can tell me the answer or point me in the right direction to happiness. So I gave up on giving them a chance a few years back.
Do you think I am writing off an industry with this thought process? Would people recommend books withing that genre to anyone suffering from mental health issues or would you try to take more into consideration first about who they are?
I also worry that some of the books take away a sense of individuality I don't see the mind as being that simple so when a book promises to change my life I see that as kind of talking down in the way I am buying into a system that means my mind was easier to fix then I thought and just needed pushing from someone who knows better then me... But that is more my hang up lol... Do those who read self help books read many or just stick to one or two?
I just find the whole culture around it a bit alien and guess I want to know peoples thoughts on it.
