Excellent topic. Well, I have a few thoughts. One is that growing up, my mom and me would often fly out to MN to visit the extended family for Xmas -- this was literally the only time I ever really saw my extended family. So I associate the holiday with opening lots of gifts (being a kid), seeing lots of family, and having no school. All good memories.
The last Christmas I ever had really was in 2014. My mom had been diagnosed on Xmas eve with dementia, and my wife and I were separated. But my wife came and we went to mom's house, and spent day together, had a brunch and mimosas, opened gifts. My wife had gotten me a very nice guitar so I played for them. We lounged and listened to music.
I haven't really had a holiday since then, have had no family. This year is the first time since that I'm not actively suicidal through the holidays, despite being totally alone still. I'm trying to just get through them, but also still feel some sense that it is Christmas, and hope everyone is doing okay or even having a nice time with the holidays.
