Ladies, gentlemen and other splendid creatures, be heartlessly welcome to Jim's Thanksgiving Café!​

Only a small tiny part of the world will be celebrating Thanksgiving tonight the traditional way. The rest of it have a pretty normal working Thursday. But hey! Traditions are only one example of many ways you can celebrate this beautiful holiday, it isn't supposed to be stressful or sad for anyone. You're never alone on SF, and especially not today. SF is also your family. Join us in our hugging party, for a minute or the whole evening. That's the least you can expect from it :

No worries, the dry turkey *coughdampsockcough* won't be the only option on the menu, you can eat whatever you have and you like.
Not really questions to answer, just a few ideas :

A few random facts for everyone, pardon me if they are obvious to Americans. :p Thank you Google.

❀ Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be the national bird, not the eagle.​
❀ The heaviest turkey on record, according to the Guinness Book of Records, weighs 86 pounds (39 kg). The average turkey for Thanksgiving weighs 15 pounds (6,8 kg).​
❀ Thanksgiving is an international celebration, also celebrated in Canada, Grenada, the Philippines, Saint Lucia, Liberia and the Netherlands.​
❀ The day after Thanksgiving was called "Black Friday" in a 1951 journal referring to workers calling in sick in order to have a four-day Thanksgiving weekend.​
❀ "The First Thanksgiving" was celebrated after their first harvest in October 1621. The feast lasted three days.​

This is not what I imagined opening my first Jim's Café would be like, but I'm quite happy I did. Tags will come.

Awesome opening of the cafe, thanks for the background details of thanksgiving, I never knew it was celebrated in other countries too.

I'm mostly surprised by the Netherlands. :wow: Here's the full quite interesting story of why Dutch people celebrate the American Thanksgiving (I made a shorter version based on the reference, here's the full one) :

" The basic story is that in the 17th century, a bunch of Pilgrim colonists sailed their ship to North America, fleeing religious persecution in England. There, they celebrated their first corn harvest by sharing a feast with the friendly Native American tribe who taught them how to farm the land. History teachers tend to leave out the fact that before the pilgrims arrived in Massachusetts, they first stopped in Leiden [in the Netherlands], and stayed there for a long time. ​

They actually went to Amsterdam first, where it all was going smoothly for a while. After spreading out to live in Leiden and building new lives, the Pilgrims realised they were changing too much. Worse: they were losing their religion (cue the lamenting tones of R.E.M). They were grateful for everything given to them here, but were struggling to adapt to the Dutch culture, which was now too liberal for their liking. William Bradford, Plymouth’s faithful Pilgrim and Colony governor, said they were being “…drawn away by evil examples into extravagance and dangerous courses.” *hysterical ​

So, fearing this would be the end of their congregation if they didn’t move on, the Pilgrims decided to head to America. In 1620, the pilgrim’s emigration from Leiden – where they had worked for about 12 to 20 years – truly began. They left Leiden via the canals towards Southampton. Ultimately, the actual time span between them leaving England and finally completing their famous voyage and great feast is pretty long.​

Here’s a little factual nugget : Thanksgiving is also upheld in orthodox Protestant churches on the first Wednesday of November.​

When and how do the Dutchies celebrate it? On the third Thursday of every November, you can find traditional Thanksgiving meals (turkey, mashed potatoes, vegetables and gravy) at restaurants across the country. Some people also eat the typically Dutch Stampoot on this day. Thanksgiving in the Netherlands is not really celebrated as it would be in America. However, there are still a few events and places around Holland that can help you get your Thanksgiving on. "​

Thank you so much for the sharing...I had no idea and am glad to have what I would think is an important piece of the history and sharing. This means that there were children born in the Netherlands, another generation, to the pilgrims prior to landing in North America...It's also interesting that it would be acknowledged still in the Netherlands after so many generations passed....

We don't celebrate Thanksgiving in the UK but I love the idea of it. I live in a small village and we have a local Facebook page. The lady who runs it is a baker and she's got an open house tonight, encouraging as many people as possible to come together for a drink and a slice of cake. If my daughter was home we'd have maybe gone along. Lovely idea :)

1) my day is just starting so not sure how I am yet.
2) I could just curl up and watch bad tv
3) I am so greatful for my daughter, for SF and all the wonderful people here and those who have helped me get through hard times but the ENTIRE SF family, and my friends and to be alive to celebrate this day with everyone
4)nope just relax watch the parade and dog show and later play games.
5)yes I have pretty much everything for it

Thanks for opening and the tag @Auri. Wishing all a wonderful day....hard to believe somehow is Thanksgiving already somehow here in the US.

So to the questions....

❥ How has your day been?
Been ok. just sitting on patio listening to the rain. Called my father as he is across the country...not an easy call but a good call.

❥ What can you do, by yourself, to have a great evening tonight?
Simply just relax...watch something on Netflix with my OH and not think about packing (we're moving in a few weeks)

❥ What are you grateful for today? What about this past year?
I realize that I have much to be grateful for...first all here on SF who are my extended family and friends...a husband who loves me despite the ups and downs caused by my depression/anxiety...to have completed the coursework and landed a job in an entirely new field...a mother in law who continues to inspire me at the age of 105...to be moving to a new house/community in a couple of weeks (assuming all goes according to plan)

❥ Do you have completely different plans for the day and evening?
Day will be spent with my mother-in-law and her friends...evening with my OH/husband just watching Netflix

❥ If you do celebrate Thanksgiving where you are, are you ready? Have you bought the turkey yet? lol
Luckily we go to where my mother in law lives so have no worries about being ready...just have to figure out what to wear....

❥ A story to share with us, a meme, a joke, a song?
Guess one story would be the time made a turkey with the plastic bag still inside...lol...nothing like some plastic flavoring...and fond memories of my mother getting up at the crack of dawn to start the turkey...her lumpless mashed potatoes and the most amazing gravy from the drippings and her homemade pumpkin pie...

We don't celebrate it here in India but I wish we did. I am thankful for my family, friends, SF family,my therapist and my work :)

When I was there in Delhi and Amritsar and Shimla etc. in September/October a week didn't go by that there wasn't a beautiful honoring celebration occurring in the streets somewhere.....I was in heaven....
