The first time I met my future mother in law was so awful I still cringe at the thought 35 years later.
We were still at school and he was just a friend at this point. A crowd of us went to the pub one evening. I was a fair bit younger than most of them and not really used to drinking. These were the days when pub landlords didn't care much about age restrictions and as the evening progressed I became more and more drunk. Eventually I had to run out into the pub garden where I fell over on the grass and was sick repeatedly for about an hour. I was wearing a white top and white trousers (forgive me, it
was the 80's) and was in a total mess. I was too scared to go home as I knew my mother would kill me so my friend took me home to his house. I remember standing in his living room, covered in vomit, trying to make polite conversation with his mother like nothing had happened.
She was actually pretty cool about it, took me upstairs, stripped me off, cleaned me up and put me to bed before phoning my mother to tell her I must have food poisoning
