Just finished watching Sonatine (1993). At the start it felt a little boring and I had no idea what was going on, but the movie turned out to be pretty good. Very nihilistic though. I think part of the fun is figuring out what the movie is trying to say. Great gangster film, a little different from the others. Soundtrack is great, too.
Hey @Angie. I'm genuinely impressed with how you keep managing to come up with good topics for the cafes, and the way you manage to vary the tone so it's never too heavy or too airy. Thanks for opening the cafe, and for tagging me. 
Nope. That's the name of the film, not me refusing to answer.
It's got Daniel Kaluuya and Steven Yeun, and a lot to say about the commodification of trauma, especially black trauma. The writing's great, the performances are flawless, the effects are good, the sound design is phenomenal, and the cinematography is beautiful. One of the best horror films i've seen in years.
I'd probably also say a horror film like Splinter or the Blair Witch Project for this question. They're films where there is a lot to appreciate on a rewatch, but the core emotions they're trying to evoke are fear and tension, and that's undermined when you already know everything that's going to happen. The Hateful Eight could also be a really good choice for that, so i could relive the tension of moments like "who's going to drink the poisoned coffee?"
Absolutely. Lots of movies. Oldboy is my favourite movie, despite being horrific and visceral, specifically because it makes you think on the futility of revenge, and the corrosive effect of holding onto anger over past transgressions.
Or my mind goes to White Noise, where they actively sacrificed making a cohesive, debatably even comprehensible film in service of the message, and how much i love that movie for it. So if i was to do a list of my top 100 films, i'd expect something like 65 of them to be there specifically because they had something profound to say.

The ending is absolutely vicious, isn't it?
They really pulled no punches with the writing decisions, but i feel like that made the message of the film so much stronger.
Nobody won in that film, everybody lost, and they all deserved to, aside from Mi-do.

What movie have you seen recently that you would recommend and why? I would recommend BlackBerry. it's real informative and entertaining. a lot of nerdy references too.
If you could see one movie again for the first time, what would it be and why? 2001: A Space Odyssey. it's my favorite film, and I'd love to experience that awe and wonder that I experienced the first time.
Is there a movie that really made you think? Primer. had to watch it about three times to understand what was going on. there's a lot of science-talking scenes where I'm not sure what they're talking about.

Ooh, that sounds really interesting, i'll have to check that out. I've also been intending to watch Parasite at some point.
Oh, and if you enjoy Steven Yeun in a piece about the disparity between rich and poor, i'd also recommend Beef, cos it's a great show, and he's fantastic in it. This one's about economic disparity in America though.

Return of the Jedi. I recommend it cos it is a cool movie, one of my faves and despite it having some “odd” scenes (especially in the beginning lol) it also has some cool scenes too. Any of the OT Star Wars movies are great imo though

What movie have you seen recently that you would recommend and why?
I have seen The Count of Monte Cristo. I loved the book and the original film, but this one is surprisingly very good as well. Especially if you're learning French, it's a classic but the language is quite easy to understand.
If you could see one movie again for the first time, what would it be and why?

So many have. I can think of The Arrival, The Imitation Game, The Magdalene Sisters, Fury, Jagten (it's a Danish film), Mother!, 500 Days of Summer, The Wind Rises...
If you'd like to watch any of them, here are little pitches :
- The Arrival : a very different perspective on aliens and how to communicate with them. Quite slow if you don't like that.
- The Imitation Game : misunderstood genius, fascinating but heartbreaking true story.
- The Magdalene Sisters : true story of 4 women forced into a convent in Ireland in the 60s.
- Fury : a great recent reminder of the horrors of war. I love the perspective of the newbie soldier.
- Jagten/The Hunt (it's a Danish film) : how someone is falsely accused of a crime in a little town and tries to rebuild his life.
- Mother! : creepy and might be unbearable to watch for some, but very interesting concept.
- 500 Days of Summer : one of the only romantic comedies I like because it has a good message.
- The Wind Rises : "light" studio ghibli, very poetic and beautiful.

Love Ghost, such a great movie! So comforting for me too, imagining that especially if there ends up being an "unfair" or unjust death that we get to stick around and see if we can "put things right" or at least make the truth of things "known" by those who may end up being affected by it.
Don't think I ever saw "The Perfect Game" movie, the premise/synopsis you gave there sounds familiar though. Oh wait, the one I watched (pretty sure it was on Netflix, wish I could remember what it was called...) wasn't about Bball though. It was also about some Mexican guys wanting to play a sport, but it was golf. It was set around that same time too (or maybe it was 60's, can't remember now lol) it was a good movie though. I'm curious to see that one you mentioned now too though, it sounds good. I love those kinds of movies, they usually inspire me a lot
