Ideas & Opinions Keep dreaming about suicide

I keep dreaming about suicide. It's icky to wake up to that, puts me in a bad mood for the day. Does this happen to anyone else? Is this normal for someone with chronic suicidality or does it mean something else is wrong? Any way to ward off these dreams?

I hardly ever remember my dreams no matter what I try. I did have a time when I had very vivid dreams. It was when I was getting sober. I was having dreams where I relapsed in varying degrees of stupidity. I woke up feeling awful before I realized it was a dream because I would have to come clean about it with my therapist and accountability partner, and because I also want sobriety for myself, and another relapse was super frustrating.

I read somewhere about “in your dreams” is the only place where you can safely drink/smoke/etc. So I started making it like an accomplishment. I got away with drinking! I did it in a dream so it doesn’t count!

Suicidal depression is obviously a different beast, but there are similarities. Both are driven by a desire to escape and both involve resisting powerful urges to go and do something destructive to ourselves and everyone around us. So I would see a suicide dream as similar. It’s something I want very badly, but I don’t want the consequences that come with it. I don’t have any suggestions for the discomfort upon waking. I feel disappointed (almost) every day that I wake up, dreams or no dreams. Sorry. I don’t know if this is helping or not.

That makes a lot of sense, thanks for sharing. I thought about it more and realized I suppose it’s good the dream as icky, means I wouldn’t really act on it.

I'm sorry this is happening. Dreams can be really disturbing, especially ones about something as intense as suicide.

Doing the acupressure self-massage in my signature link might be worth a try. Acupuncture treatments seems to work right away for me when I have disturbing dreams.

If you boil some rosemary and drink the water (aka, make tea out of it), that might be helpful too.

I hope things will get better soon.

Thanks, I'll give it a try.

I dream about it too, most often after becoming irritable or (oddly) taking a bath.
Sorry to hear you have this too.
