Hi there,

I would say I have pretty good self determination and personal drive but I sometimes struggle with keeping myself accountable. I know this may seem cliché but I've never had someone to keep me in check and drive me. I am trying to drive myself and use my own self motivation but some days it is not easy.

David goggins is an inspiration for me and says that you need to use your past to drive yourself forward which I wholeheartedly agree with. Although, some days or weeks I just want to talk to someone that keeps me in check and makes sure my mind is clear. Is this a wrong way of thinking or do successful people have a team or group of friends that support them?

It always helps to have a support system, people who motivate you to do the right things for yourself and who are there when you need them. It's important to be self-motivated as well, but having people around who care, people you can turn to in times of need is just as important.

For sure, i only have my parents really at this time and I obviously don't want to overwhelm them. Finding that support group is key and I can't just overwhelm strangers with my problems. I have two close friends and I don't want to overwhelm them either since everyone lives their own lives with their own problems

Well, you won't be overwhelming anyone here. We're a group where, yes, everyone has their own problems to worry about, but we still make time to support others with theirs because we can relate.

Since you asked for feedback...in my own experience with recovery, being accountable to others proved to be a liability not an asset. Seeking support and validation from others, even getting advice from people who have followed along similar paths is very helpful and inspirational. But being accountable to certain people is a slippery slope. The whole point of recovery is to bring you face to face with yourself so that over time you will learn how to be accountable to yourself, not dependent upon anyone else's influence. My personal opinion is that finding people to be accountable to would move you in a direction that would eventually lead you to relapse, not successful steps towards recovery. Best wishes-LT
