Losing my apartment

My landlord just told me that they aren't renewing my lease and that I have to be out by the end of June. My apartment did not pass the inspection, even though I spent weeks working on it. I thought they were going to give me some time to improve, but the owner wants me out. I'm devastated. It is a huge amount of money time and work to move, and I don't have it.

Now I feel like suicide is the only answer. I can't do this.

Be practical: everything you put in there (money wise) and you can still sell, give back, return - do it. You have 5 weeks left - this gives you some time to find other possibilities. I do not know where you are living - but if by chance in ES you can always live here with us for a time - no charges. Its simple but nice. PS: Apartments can be rented here from 350 EUR on. And they are big...

How terrible @alice202 . Please stay safe. *sadhug

You have us.

This is jumping way ahead to realistic matters: Is there a way to break down the tasks ahead, is what I am wondering. Please send me a private message if you want to talk.

Thanks, you are so nice. I live in US, not sure what ES is!

Thank you... headless chicken would be an improvement... I am getting a full on migraine. Fortunately I have the medication I need.

I wrote to the property manager asking for mercy due to my age and medical condition. She said she forwarded my email to the manager and that one of them would get back to me. But I have my doubts that it will change anything.

I stopped working and asked my partner to cover for me. I can't think straight. I started looking for apartments online, but they are all so expensive.

Update: So after reading my pity email the owner agreed to grant me a month to month lease starting June 1. So I have the apartment for June, and they have to give me 60 days notice after that. If I want to leave I have to give them 60 days notice.

They are scheduling a re-inspection in mid-June, so I guess everything has to be perfect by then. It still feels like a lot of pressure, but not as bad.

Hey I am glad there was some middle ground reached and that you had migraine medication on hand. Hopefully next time around things should work out completly. Wishing you lots of luck and strenght!

Is the month to month lease going to be the same price as the yearly? Most places I know charge a higher rate for month to month. Just want to make sure you know one way or the other now so there are no surprises.

They didn't say, but I don't have much of a choice. This place has fairly reasonable rent for the market I live in, which is why I really don't want to have to leave. Its impossible to find a less expensive place. I suppose it will probably go up some. I'll find out tomorrow.

Kitchen and bathroom are pretty good. I have two bedrooms and both have a bunch of boxes and storage bins. I just checked out storage places online and I can get something 10x10 and put a lot of packed up stuff in there. Its that much less to move if I have to move permanently.

I think impassable indoor hallways are considered a fire hazard. These aren't impassable. But its their standard so I have to get rid of the bins. They gave two days notice that there would be an inspection for lease violations, maintenance issues, and "housekeeping". I didn't have any of the first two. Housekeeping is my downfall. Now I feel like it has to be perfect.

If I move the packed up stuff to storage it will be easier to clean up the rest. I'd rather go through it slowly and decide what to throw out, what to store, what to keep... but I've lost that option.

Kicker is I have a two week vacation that starts Tuesday. Its been planned and paid for for a year, so there is no way I am cancelling it. But this makes it a lot harder to enjoy. I can't start a serious cleanup till May 15. Then I have a month. I am grateful for the extension, but its still a big stressor.

I work full time so most of the cleaning gets done on weekends.

I could use about 3 months, but I only have one.

Thanks for sharing those details. I see how having a bunch of bins and boxes will be a challenge. Stuff accumulates over time, and it's always amazing to me how many things I find to throw away when I move. Maybe it gets trickier if some of the stuff was not yours originally.

Even though it of course costs money, like everything, if you do need help with regular cleaning perhaps you could hire a professional cleaner to come in. Then you can focus on downsizing your bins which will save you money on storage or time and money on your next move. Wish I had a less basic suggestion. Really feel for your moving pain.

There is a program here in the UK on the BBC called ‘sort your life out’ with Stacy Solomon.
In it they go to peoples houses that are full of stuff and they then take it all out to a big warehouse and then the owners have to sort through it in 2 days and throw out over half. They then take it back to the house and organise it for them.
Although every episode is different there are some consistent themes, the people have usually had some kind of trauma that means they want to keep stuff, that the stuff has built up over a long time and has started to overwhelm them and they are struggling to know where to start to tackle it. Throwing the stuff away is a brutal, emotional and stressful thing for them. Afterwards they are always much happier in their sparser home and the extra space they have has improved their lifestyle
Often I think it comes down to people not wanting to throw stuff out because something has value but then the issue becomes that you have so much stuff that you can’t actually use the things you do have.
Everything that you have takes up space which makes it harder to live and clean so there is a cost to keeping things. You have to try and assess everything really rationally and brutally and if the value to you is smaller than the cost of keeping it then throw it out.

The storage place could be a good idea for you to take a much as you can out of your apartment and put it somewhere else. If you have less stuff in the apartment it will make cleaning and maintenance much easier.

Do you have anyone who can help you with things?
