No longer suicidal after 8 years of depression

I am liking what you are saying @iloverachel . Go get this. You definitely can do it, I just know it. πŸ€—

I'm not overweight but constantly struggle against the lure of sugar. it is trying to insinuate its way back into my diet. I know that sugar is addicting and gives a dopamine boost every time we use it. I need to recover. My goal is to recover. I need to move back to NSW where my body feels it is home. If I can continue my running, and strength work, maybe I will be strong enough to handle moving again. I've moved before and so it is a scary prospect to get back up and try. But the alternative is, as you mentioned, ctb.

btw I have a hard rule of not having any soda, nor starbuck-type-"coffees" at all.
Thank you
Where are you residing now?
Did you permanently move from NSW?
Yes sugar is so addictive!! That's why I didn't cut it out I just replaced most of it
Soda with juice
Ice cream with yoghurt
Chocolate with fruits like bananas
Good luck you can do this too

β€’ I'm in the pacific northwest of the us at the moment.
No, my err mailing address for Australia is still in _ mid north coast of NSW. But I dunno if I'll be allowed back in that house to get my stuff, my wallet, computer, etc. I'm trying to figure out how to get back without utterly burning through my savings.
I'm so glad you are doing this and yeah taking the amount of sugar way down is excelllent. I've begun to lose my taste for it. Which is greaat.
I've cut out juice along with other sweetened beverages.
plain full fat yoghurt with a little maple syrup for when I have to have something sweet and satisfying
I also use plain medjool dates as a substitute for candy, but only 1 or 2 at most

Good luck you too thanks @iloverachel

Spoonful of sugar will help the medicine go down

Not eating junk food was so hard. It got better once I stopped focusing on cutting things out and focused on adding in healthy options. I feel like this is more natural, and going "cold turkey" only made me more miserable and prone to binge eating, while I still indulge sometimes I no longer eat a whole bag of chips and find just a small amount is satisfying.
I'd recommend a vegetarian cookbook, there are lots of recipes that are filling and tasty. It can be hard to know what to do with veggies, burn out happens, so tap into your creative side and buy some seasonings!
Ginger and mint go well with lemon water, bot or cold. I've also added apples, cucumber or orange.
Some otc headache meds have caffeine and help tame withdrawal headaches.
Hope this helps, good luck!

I also learnt that too much body fat decreases testosterone levels and increases estrogen which causes anxiety, depression to worsen. I will stick to my diet. Hopefully this can be my journal and accountability thread, and you guys can join too!
I did not konw that!

nyway how have you been? Any improvements in your mental health since you ate more healthy?

Also, don't know if I'd / I've stated it before, @iloverachel : but it's the surge in, and/or the excess(ive) amount s of, "insulin" in which you're realy triying to AVOID ; by/or when (& -or with)... once you begin to engage with all of the 'unhelthy,' eating. Consmuption of carbs, sugar & processed foods, tec. ;^) So, this is why with diabetics, sometimes in some of the more bad cases, they will wind up going blind, or have their hands & feet, (seemingly) explode. Not that it sounds you are anywher near this danger, but it's like, once their live r has had enough & etc. This bad stuff floats around in the body's stream & goes eevery where, eveentually leading to a rottign of things out. Now also can be true: you can be (in appearance-wise); or appearing, as--otherwise physically healthy. Meaning, no (body) fat. ANd yet, your organs if all you do is eat crap, can be loaded up with junk. I believe the term in some palces, is 'skinny-fat, but wew dont' need to get in/to that~!*

-cutting out processed junk like chocolate, ice cream, sweets to once a week
-limiting portion sizes of meals
-meditation , will try to do it for longer periods, hopefully at least 30 minutes a day or 20 minutes twice a day to clear my mind
-will continue to reach out, help people on here, as I always feel better when i do that
Cutting out processed foods
This sounds awesome!
-less carbs at night time
I've heard that it's good not to eat anything for a few hours before bedtime, but I hadn't heard anything about carbs in particular at night.
-incorporating more workout sessions, adding in deadlifts and leg exercises (boosts testosterone)
Those might be good, but there's some risk to your back and knees if exercises like these aren't done correctly.
-eating more fruits like grapes, oranges, bananas daily and vegetablses
I've had a lot of success with traditional Chinese dietary therapy. The core concept is to eat freshly cooked whole foods served warm. Chewing thoroughly is also good.

There's also notions of what foods to eat and not eat, which can vary significantly between person to person. Most people should eat primarily vegetables and grains, with only small amounts of everything else.

A little bit of fruit can be ok, but from this perspective more than that can be a problem, especially since fruits are often consumed cold and raw.

Unsweetened yoghurt with live cultures is considered the best form of dairy. Any amount of dairy can be a problem for some people (not just people who are lactose intolerant), especially if you're overweight.

That's just my 2 cents on the subject. However you proceed, I hope it works well for you. :)

I love medjool dates. I hope this works well for you.

The problem I have with medjool dates is that I start out wanting to eat just one or two, but I end up binging and eating the whole container in about an hour. It's the same problem I have with all sweets. It's either cold turkey or binging for me.

I happened to see this just now. lol I am sorry you tend to binge, thus have to cut out all sweets. I'm glad the dates are, for whatever reason, satisfying for me at just 1 or 2. I'm wondering if you're getting enough complex carbs. What I mean is, when I notice I'm craving sweets it is either due to not enough protein, or a basic deficit of whole foods. I've cut out regular wheat, so for me that means whole buckwheat, rice, vegetables and a variety of once-in-a-while foods like beets, potatoes, and mushrooms. I tend to talk to much about nutrition so stopping here.
