Sorry to hear how you're having a flare up. Hope it subsides soon.

There might be something here which could be of help, particulary the links lower down the page regarding living with and managing arhritis in everyday life.

Good luck with your consultant appointment on the 21st!

Thank you Ash, it's pretty much spread to everywhere now, in a way it's a good thing, as it's made me write it all down for the consultant.

Luckily I had the day off work anyway and so it's only the house that's suffered for it, I'm proud of myself for only taking two Zapain today too, I've stuck to ibuprofen and rest.

I hope all's okay in your world?
I'll check out those links, thanks again

If it's RA, then anti-inflammatories such as ibufprofen can be more effective. They can take a while for them to exert it's full antiinflammatory effect with it's analgesic benefits being seen initially when starting treatment. However, be sure to take it with or just after food, and if you do take this or any other NSAID on a regular basis, then be sure the docs prescribe you something to protect the stomach such as a PPI.

My world's been ok thanks, Pennylane, things went relatively smoothly at work, which isn't bad for a Monday ;)

I was looking for it in the small print at the bottom of the forum
Yeah sorry, been a bit of a long day at work for me.Well that's my excuse and I'm going to attempt to stick at it.:p

tried to send a laughing emoji then but I couldn't, I hope that didn't sound like a reprimand!
That's cool, it doesn't sound like a reprimand.

...if you had sent a "where the f##k is the f##king link?" then I might've interpreted it as a mil reprimand;)

I haven't quite got the hang of quoting specific lines in messages yet, but I hope today's a shorter, easier day for you if you're at work again, thanks again for taking the time to help

If you left click on the start of the line(s) you wish to quote, drag it across higlighting the desired areas in blue, another "quote/reply" tab comes up for you to select.

I hope today's a shorter, easier day for you if you're at work again, thanks again for taking the time to help
You're welcome, Penny, anytime, and thanks for your kind words :) Hope you're in not so much discomfort today, and your day goes well for you as well.

Hey,

I have been in and out of the doctors surgery over the past two years with various pain and swelling and was then knocked off my feet with a lung infection a couple of months ago, they discovered that one of my lungs is very badly scarred, after some blood tests I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis,

I'm 45, I've been put on a waiting list to see a consultant, my appointment came through as at the end of November. I'm a chef and my job is very fast paced and active, I've been taking a high dose of codeine and inflammatory drugs to keep getting me into work, I'm also a scuba diver and live for my trips to the sea.

I was wondering if anyone else here has this disease, specifically whether it's attacking their lungs? How they deal with it, what I should expect and whether I will still be able to dive?

I have a month long diving holiday booked for April next year, I'm assuming they will start me on the meds in November but I'm worried that these will leave me open to catching infections, but if I don't take them will it be safe to dive?

Thank you in anticipation, I will appreciate any advice and/or information
Hi! I have lupus that affects my lungs and though it’s not RA, they’re treated similarly. I’ve been on a slew of immunosuppressants and none of them have caused me to catch serious infections. I’ve noticed I get more colds and I throw up a bit more, but that’s the worst of it. I do have some serious lung damage, my lungs are bad and I get pulmonary edema quite often and have to go to hospital. I would definitely be on regular doctors appointments for your lungs, but as for diving? Immunosuppressants shouldn’t affect your diving lifestyle. For me, they haven’t caused a ton of noticeable side effects.

Hi @adresteia,

Thank you so much for your reply, how long have you been taking the meds? Does your condition stop you from doing much?

I feel like my RA is progressing quite quickly and so I'm pretty sure I will accept the medication, my first appointment with my consultant is on Wednesday. I was worried about how the meds will effect my diving but more worried that the state of my lungs will, my specific concern is regarding ascending and any nitrogen bubbles in my lungs getting caught in the scar tissue there. Hopefully the consultant will have heard this concern before.

You're very young to be dealing with all this, when were you diagnosed?

Hi again @adrasteia

Sorry I misspelled your name in my last reply, I just read your story, wow what a strong young lady you are, I'm so sorry that you've had so much to deal with.

It must be so difficult to find the energy to keep fighting, when I had my first lung x-rays the doctor told me that if I continue to smoke I can expect to live for another 3-5 years, this was before my RA diagnosis, around two years ago, I gave up for around a year and have been smoking again now for a year. I feel very guilty about this, especially when people such as yourself have done nothing to bring about your illness.

I do know however how it feels to be living on a timer. I liken it to the same overwhelming emotions you have when someone very close to you dies, you can't live with it consuming you 24/7 life must go on X

It is something that is always running in the background if that makes sense? But you can't let those thoughts take the wheel? Academics and scholars throughout history used to work with a scull on their desk or in their study, to remind them of their mortality, you and I have inbuilt reminders, I try to use that to make myself really live in the beautiful moments that I experience, I try not to pass up any opportunity to experience something if I can find the energy and support.

I drink in people's smiles, beautiful sunrises, small natural things like the movement of birds and the wind in the trees, things that make me feel like a part of the world. It's why I love to dive, I feel like a part of something eternal.

I hope I haven't sounded cheesy or corny but I just wanted to encourage you to drink it all in, all of it, even the frowns and the mishaps.

Sending strength and compassion to you, you're strong, intelligent and brave and you can accomplish so much, don't give in x

Okay, so the consultant x-rayed my hands and feet, booked me in for a CT test to check my lungs and prescribed me three months worth of meds.

He said he'd see me again after he gets the results of my CT and told me I absolutely have to stop smoking.

Plan tomorrow is to ask the doctor for some patches as the last time I had really bad pleurisy it was after using a vape for six months so I'm reluctant to use one again and I know I'm incapable of giving up cold Turkey.

He said it's dangerous to smoke and take one of the meds and that smoking makes RA more aggressive anyway. As one of my lungs is already buggered I'm likely to have problems.

All in all if I give up smoking right now take the meds religiously and be careful of catching anything I think things will be good, so long as my lungs aren't a whole lot worse than last time.
Touch wood.

Seems like they've got the ball rolling with your RA treatment..

Best of luck with knocking the smoking on the head. Patches should help, but using an add on NRT product such as gum, oral spray, lozenges, inhalator can help in addiiton. The thinking behind is that the patches will provide background levels of nicotine in your system and the other products can provide that extra relief should any breakthrough cravings occur.

I've only had one of the DMARDS and I already feel sick, I'm going to use every substitute for nicotine that I can get, other than Vapes.

Thanks Ash I shall be purchasing pretty much all of those things!
