families like mine dont usually get to go on holidays to the beach. you see, mum and dad never really liked the beach much. dad always
hated it, and mum said it was too hot anyway. dad's the boss of the family. me and mum always do what he says.
liz, one of my friends, says dad is chauvenistic, whatever that means. she always uses big words like that.
anyway, back to the story, dad said a friend of his had a holiday house on the beach. he wanted to know if me and mum wanted to go
there for a week. of course, we said yes. when dad asks something, you dont really have a choice. i was excited, i had never been to the
beach before. that night we packed, and the next day we drove off.
it wasnt terribly exciting, the beach house. it was a weatherboard shack, with a tin roof, that was starting to get rusty. the door creaked,
the floorboards were dirty, and the walls of the house were a covered in a sickly green wallpaper that had flowers on it. in some places,
the wallpaper was peeling off. clearly, the house had seen better days.
my room must have been the worst room in the house. altough it was fairly big, it smelt funny and the bed was all hard and
uncomfortable. the window also didn't open properly, so the room was very stuffy. there was also a huge blob on the wallpaper. dad said
it was water damage. to me, it looked like a big ugly face, its pouchy little eyes following me everywhere i went. i hated my room, and i
hated that face. i decided i would get rid of it during my week here.
i had the days to myself mostly. dad always decided what he and mum were going to do for the day. they set off early, dad, all burly and
big, and mum beside him, following him eagerly like a dog follows its owner. when mum and dad left for the day, i got to work.
(dunno what to put in the middle)
thats how my parents found me, collapsed on the floor, my hands covered in sticky red slippery stuff. although by then it had dried and
went all dark red. they took me to the hospital, the psychiatric ward. i didnt know why i was there. the face followed me there, laughing
at me evilly. even today, it mocks me. i still dont know why i'm here, in the psychiatric ward. i dont think i'm crazy. Do you?
