i'm sorry witty, some alcoholics can't cross that bridge to recovery, it's just too far. you have done your best to get her to stop so please don't blame yourself. you can keep trying to reason with her and remind her that if she doesn't quit soon it will be too late. i wish you all the luck in the world with your mom

Thank you, I hope she will quit before it's too late. It's totally preventable but she doesn't seem to care at this point. She says "It's only stage one", but she doesn't see how serious it is yet.

i'm not sure if you can but maybe download info on the disease and show her that it will not only kill her but make her suffer until she passes. maybe a good dose of thruth can help. i sure hope she eventually listens to you. another tactic could be a guilt trip about you being alone. you have been brave through this i commend you

Witty, when my mom was diagnosed with lung cancer she refused to even try and quit smoking. Sometimes these habits/addictions are just too overwhelming.

I'm really sorry to hear that. I wish it was just easier, but I know addictions are complicated and it will take a lot of work if she wants to get over it.

Sad to hear the news about your mom, I hope that she will be able to quit the drinking. The liver is supposedly the only organ that can repair/regenerate itself. I wish her, you and the family the best outcome possible.

Just saw it confirmed that the pharmacy I use for my prescriptions is closing down in a few days. The article says that means there will not be a pharmacy in my neighborhood anymore. There is one not too much farther away, on my way to work, but it doesn't take my insurance. I guess I will have to start filling my prescriptions at the grocery store that's nearly a mile and a half in the opposite direction. But sometimes I need to pick up my meds on the way to work because I barely have time to go any other day, and that won't be possible anymore. It's also about a half hour to walk down there (and very tiring because I have to go up a big hill), and for some reason the buses headed out that way are always extremely unreliable.
There's a lot of people in my neighborhood, including many seniors, and it's ridiculous that they're just abandoning our community.
