Do you guys actually know each other in person? I mean for the staffs and few well known members. They all seem connected and even call a few people by real name sometimes. Just curious *happyno
staff works close for obvious reasons, and even I and others sign our name a lot. I sign by mike a lot of the time so people can call me mike or dodge. I always try to use mike when I want to make a real connection. you can sign with your avatar, or first name but never use your last. I don't know any staff personally irl life but there are some I would like to meet they are wonderful people I am honored to call friends. mike

I keep hearing of these meetups and in a way I think it's great on one hand but not sure if it would be ok for me. 1. i'm not sure if I could still confide on SF if I met some in person. and 2. i'm getting older and show it (not the greatest looking lol) and being on oxygen and possibly having to use my wheelchair, i'm afraid of people pitying me I can't stand that. maybe next year i'll try to get a northeast hookup and get over my silly fears
I feel you here. The idea of meeting people is downright terrifying. I prefer to stay hidden from society. Verbal communication is not something I'm able to do with any consistency. You think I'm awkward online, it's 50x's worse in person. Sometimes I have my cane, which is just yeah. So I totally feel you here. I look at the meetup threads and think ... yeah no. I also don't do groups.

YouTube recommended a video of some old lady reacting to a live version of Slipknot's "People=Shit". Most of the time, she just made a lot of faces like this: ๐Ÿ˜•๐Ÿ˜ฎ๐Ÿ˜ณ๐Ÿ˜“๐Ÿ˜ง

But then out of the blue she just asks, "What does that even mean? "people equal shit"? I don't get it.

Um...it's pretty self-explanatory, lady.

OK, it's a 2 parter.

A, I bought my grandparents an Amazon Echo Dot as a gift from me to them on my birthday, finally got to give it to them today. But during the process of setting the thing up (which is far more complicated than the advertising would have you believe), I often felt like i couldn't get a word in edgewise between the conversation of my grandparents, my dad, and my uncle, to ask necessary questions or explain ideas. My grandparents are massive technophobes, i knew they wouldn't be able to set any of this up or know how to operate the Echo if i didn't explain it properly to them, so i was desperately trying to get it all to the point i thought they could get enough use out of it for now until i can come back and set up other features. But it felt like i kept being ignored in my efforts to do so.

B, Discussing this in the car ride home with my dad, i felt like i was being a petulant, self-congratulatory child, because listening to myself talk, it was like i was saying "everyone drop what they're doing and pay attention to me and the awesome thing i bought for you!". My dad kept trying to convince me that i'd just wanted to help, and that i hadn't done anything wrong, but the more he made me have this conversation, the worse i felt, which just made him keep going trying to persuade me not to feel that way. So despite my day going well, and the good i did being appreciated, i'm mad at myself and feel like a stupid douche.

You aren't a stupid douche and you're not acting like a kid. It's normal to want people to listen to you, especially when you're feeling ignored. Try not to be so hard on yourself.

Someone said "He's absolutely lovely, he just needs to calm down" ... about me. First, I am NOT lovely ... ahhhh. Second, I am calm. I am completely fucking calm! Why do people think I'm not calm. Okay, they may have a point. I'm still not lovey. What does that mean in British speak anyway? Why am I surrounded by British people?

*This was by someone at work, who is out of our England office.

that's funny in so many ways i'm sorry i'll try to stop laughing. children teach they're parents about technology and then it passes us and our children have to help us, circle of life. you needed their attention to help them enjoy it and without a gavel was difficult. I helped my dad for hours on his vcr (I know i'm ancient) and when I visited him the following week he had hours of static, after more hours we got it. sometimes we have to be patient and it sounds like you did a great job, and such a wonderful gesture buying your grandparents a gift on your birthday. you are an extraordinary person, one i'm proud to call a friend. mike

Have to take my dad tomorrow to the LVAD clinic. (his heart is failing and he has a heart pump to help circulate the blood throughout his body)

Dread driving to Charlotte and dealing with all of the insane traffic.

Plus, I won't be able to see my silly girl tomorrow due to the time conflict.

Just remembered and finally answered Libby asking about what to do with the Christmas charity fund - she's been asking since the 3rd, and i could tell from the tone of her latest text that she was getting kind of passive-aggressively annoyed. And all i needed to say was that i was happy to contribute, but don't want to be involved in the process of deciding where it should go. I guess it kind of fell into the noise of my entire life collapsing around me up until now. Now i feel like more of a douche for accidentally ignoring her trying to sort out the money.

You have had so much going on lately, you didn't do anything on purpose and shouldn't feel so bad.
