One of the dogs ran away today (we eventually brought her home), and we were brainstorming ways to stop that from happening again.

I suggested building a chamber with another door next to the first door and using it like an airlock. My niece suggested a baby gate. Her idea was better. She said it was similar to mine, but not stupid.

@Gonz I don't see your idea as stupid at all. Wouldn't the dog just jump over or go charging right through/knock down a baby gate?
She’s a yorkie, and pretty small for one of those. It could probably hold her. We have another one who probably could get past it (another yorkie, but this one’s pretty big for the breed) but she’s really mellow and doesn’t try to run away.

Oh, that makes sense @Gonz. Now I remember a pic of your adorable dog. Your idea reminded me of a small structure I built which we attached to the side of the cabin, over/in front of a sliding glass door. The design was just a steeply pitched heptagon. Once the dog grew up it slept in there on one side and there was just enough space on the other side for a few pine logs. I mean, with space to walk in-between and open the door.

I know I buy pens all the time. No ballpoint, with me liking a heavier print when writing and always black ink. Sharpies and highlighters as well. I run through tons of them at work and always keep scores, not dozens, of each.
I used to have an entire drawer full of pens that I had collected from various places. This was before tap-to-pay and we had to sign paper credit card receipts. I will almost always stick a pen in my pocket unless I have something blocking me, like when they put a fake flower on the end so that it will not fit. Problem with too many pens is they all dry out and then you have to test 30 goddam ballpoints before you find a working one! OTOH, pen tubes often come in handy for ad-hoc DIY projects around the house/apartment.

My solution was to get a nice, expensive pen. That way I have an incentive to keep track of it, and it would be more likely to actually work when I needed it. I got one that came with a free gel pen on the side and so far I have managed to hold on to both of them. They have a certain place in a holder where I will notice if one goes missing. Another pen I have is a "space pen" I got from a camping goods store. It is pressurized such that it can write upside down, and possibly even underwater. The reason it's called a space pen is that it was developed for use by astronauts in orbit, similar to how we invented Tang drink mix. The pen has been able to work for me even after extended storage so I think it's living up to its promise. I used to have a Kyocera ceramic ballpoint pen, but it got lost unfortunately in between moves.
