It's been almost a month since everything crashed down around me and sent me into a very dark place.

Today, I took some small steps and managed to start doing one of my favorite parts of my self-care routine, reading. I hadn't been able to bring myself to focus on reading during this entire mental health episode and I finally managed to get a chapter and a half finished and I'm likely to get even more in.

This will be my first step in establishing a new self-care routine and I'm hoping I can get step two established this week, possibly even step 3.

Reading is incredibly relaxing. I found an article on Healthline that said it lowers your heart rate and blood pressure as much as yoga!

Clip from the article:
Reading is very, very good for you. Research shows that regular reading:

  • improves brain connectivity
  • increases your vocabulary and comprehension
  • empowers you to empathize with other people
  • aids in sleep readiness
  • reduces stress
  • lowers blood pressure and heart rate
  • fights depression symptoms
  • prevents cognitive decline as you age
  • contributes to a longer life

That’s incredible, I’m so proud of you, I was like you and stopped reading when I got depression, this past year I have gotten back into it and read 10 books this year, not a lot but a start. Keep going, it’s such a great way to take your mind off of things. What else will you be including in your self care routine? :)
