I've found that counselors are quite varied in their skill and tact..... I've had some really shitty ones before (lets not go there) but also this really really good one right now... She totally respects confidentiality and privacy and doesn't ask anything you're not comfortable with at all.
If you're interested in looking into therapy, it can take patience--but if you find that right person it pays off.
However, I know that not everyone is comfortable with talking about feelings and shit with anyone--even a licenced mental health person, so in the end it's totally up to you
