Good morning and happy Star Wars Day!

I am going to be a bit of a lazy bastard and repost a thread from a few years ago, but since I suspect there are quite a few new people who didn't get to participate in the last one, I feel a little justified!

Feel free to help tag others!

Today is Star Wars Day, so the topic will be....well, Star Wars, duh!

Here's a few questions, but feel free to post any thoughts, pictures, comments about the Star Wars universe and how this phenomenon has (or hasn't!) impacted your life...

1. How old were you when you saw the original 1977 film that started it all? Did you see it in the theater when it was originally released? What were your first impressions?

2. What is your favorite film of the series and why?

3. Did you like any of the prequels or post-quels? Or should Lucas have just stopped after Episode 6?

4. Which character is your favorite and why?

1. How old were you when you saw the original 1977 film that started it all? Did you see it in the theater when it was originally released? What were your first impressions?

I was 9 years old and saw it in the theater the weekend it came out. I was blown away by it.. I can remember the anticipation building in the weeks prior to its release. It was like the world had entered a new era...I guess, in some respects, it had..

I saw it three times on the big screen that year. My best friend at the time saw it THIRTEEN times (!!!)

2. What is your favorite film of the series and why?

A tough call...I love all three films of the original trilogy, and have a bit of a soft spot for Return of the Jedi. So many great sequences... Luke busting his pals (and himself) out of Jabba's prison...the speed-bike chase through the forests of Endor...the epic duel between Luke and Vader...and my favorite: the Ewoks opening a can of primitive ass-kicking on Palpatine's stormtroopers...

3. Did you like any of the prequels or post-quels? Or should Lucas have just stopped after Episode 6?

I really didn't care for 1-3 and 7-8 (I never saw 9 and still have no interest in seeing it whatsoever) although there are bits in them all that are good. Rogue One is probably my favorite one outside of the original trilogy.

4. Which character is your favorite and why?

Obi Wan....Alec Guinness is just so understatedly badass...

5. Do you own/did you you own any Star Wars merchandise/collectibles?

I had some of the action figures, as well as a plastic model kit of C3PO...some puzzles, and the Topps trading cards. Some of the comic books as well..

6. Have you ever been to a Star Wars fan convention (or any sci-fi/fantasy/comic book convention)?

I've never been to a sci-fi/fantasy/comic book convention, but think it'd be fun!

Thanks for opening up on Star Wars Day @LonelyHiker my main Star Wars memory has to do with the first one in 1977. I was a junior in high school and my group of friends and I went to see it. The only catch was that it was being shown at One theater in the Boston area and in Boston. We lived 10 miles away so a group of us went and waited in line for about 5 hours which was the norm in that time for Star Wars. I remember being awed by the movie.
The other movies did not capture my imagination as much but I also did not have to wait in line for the others.
But I listened to the music score from the movie for a long period.

I was born after 1977, just, I can’t remember when I saw the first 3 films but I wasn’t overly into them as a child. I did weirdly own a millennium falcon toy when I was a child, I don’t think I even knew it was from a film though and now I know how much it is worth I deeply regret not keeping it. I know everyone hates it but I actually like episode 1, seeing the origin of Vader. I like all the robots, particularly the sarcastic droid from rogue one.

Heyy Lonely Hiker, thank you soo much for tagging me here! And also, for not only “opening the cafe today” but honoring Star Wars day/May the “fourth” be with you” lol, I love it sooo much (of course, lol!) 😃🥰🥰🥰🥰❤️❤️❤️❤️

I’ll answer the q’s and then perhaps do some more tags as well (didn’t look very “closely” at who you tagged but if there’s any (especially “regulars” who might have been missed, I will do my best to get them tagged and hopefully help with getting some more replies here) ;)

1. How old were you when you saw the original 1977 film that started it all? Did you see it in the theater when it was originally released? What were your first impressions?
I wasn’t “alive” in 1977 (born in ‘84) and I didn’t actually truly “see” (as in “watch it from beginning to end, lol) the original ‘77 one til 2018. My first impressions of it were that despite it looking kinda “old” to my eyes, Mark Hamill absolutely made up for it all, lol. Ya, it was pretty much “lust” at first sight I guess you could say. For many years I thought I “loved” him, but that was before I had really known or understood what “true love” was. Now that I know, I see it was far too “shallow” of a thing to ever call “love” lol. He is a very big part of why the OT movies are by far my “faves” of all the movies, and they definitely would not remotely be “the same” without him imo :)😍 🥰❤️

2. What is your favorite film of the series and why?
Episode 6 - Return of the Jedi. I prefer not to really give my real “reason” for that lol, so let’s just say it has to do with how certain things “look” in it, and leave it at that, lol. I know lots of people think it’s lame but I thought those ewoks (my friend calls them “teddy bears” lol) were really cute too 😉😋😊

3. Did you like any of the prequels or post-quels? Or should Lucas have just stopped after Episode 6?
Don’t remotely care about the prequels, and yes, part of that is cos many of them don’t have Mark Hamill in them, and also I just kinda thought they sucked and were unnecessary.

4. Which character is your favorite and why?
Lol ok this one has pretty much already been answered by me since I mention him in almost all my above answers, but ya - Luke Skywalker. I think it’s quite obvious “why” lol :p ;)

5. Do you own/did you you own any Star Wars merchandise/collectibles?
Lol, yup, sure do! Some of the things I have are:
- Playing cards in a collectible tin (includes a “prequel” deck too, which I don’t remotely care about, lol)
- A Yoda pen that cost way too much (but I do love it, lol)
- A couple “funko” figurines (of Luke, of course)
- A couple Lego figurines (from my friend, I didn’t go nuts with it though, I only have Luke and Leia, lol)
- A couple cool “pop up” Hallmark cards (and a couple regular/non-pop up cards too)
- Some t-shirts (ep 5 one of Luke and Yoda in a “starry night” Van Gogh art style, one that says “May the force be with you”, one that says “May the forest be with you” and a Christmas one)
- Graphic novel of the original trilogy
- Vintage “Return of the Jedi” book (found it on etsy lol)
- Various other books and some magazines too
- Probably other things too but these are all I can think of lol.

6. Have you ever been to a Star Wars fan convention (or any sci-fi/fantasy/comic book convention)?
Sadly, no, but would love to be able to do such a thing one day! If ever it’s possible, at the very least would love to be able to check out the various SW-related locations in California someday :)

1. How old were you when you saw the original 1977 film that started it all? Did you see it in the theater when it was originally released? What were your first impressions?

I saw it when I was 13 in the theater on first run. I thought it was pretty good space opera sci-fi like so much of the old pulp stories from the Golden Age of Science Fiction. Quick and immediate action that went forward nicely.

2. What is your favorite film of the series and why?

The first one for setting the stage.

3. Did you like any of the prequels or post-quels? Or should Lucas have just stopped after Episode 6?

I would have stopped at the first three. The first three flowed smoothly with the story lines and the others seemed more patched together knowing they would make money.

4. Which character is your favorite and why?

Jar Jar Binks. He is the heart, soul and backbone of the Star Wars Universe. LOL My favorite would have to be Vader, I sometimes root for villains, plus at heart he is not totally Dark Side and is redeemed. But I do have to admit that Leia in a bikini was great. :)

5. Do you own/did you you own any Star Wars merchandise/collectibles?

Nothing here. I probably would have if I was younger when the movies came out. I have always wanted a working lightsaber and not a prop one but one that works just like in the movies, that would be pretty cool. I could open my own chop shop for stolen cars.

6. Have you ever been to a Star Wars fan convention (or any sci-fi/fantasy/comic book convention)?

I have attended the Bi-Mon-Sci-Fi-Con in Springfield. Me and Homer drink tons of Duff afterwards. Never have been to conventions. Here in the Waco area they don't much take place and I have always been pretty lazy about getting out and traveling to bigger cities.

I was not alive when it first came out, and I believe I saw the original after watching The Phantom Menace in theaters. I used to be huge into Star Wars as a kid.
2. What is your favorite film of the series and why?
I haven't watched in forever. I'd need a refresher before being able to answer this.
3. Did you like any of the prequels or post-quels? Or should Lucas have just stopped after Episode 6?
I liked the prequels mostly. I feel like The Phantom Menace, especially, had a lot of kid-friendly aspects to it, so I saw it when it first came out and I was very young, and I had a good time. I was an edgy preteen/teenager when Revenge of the Sith came out, so I appreciated the darker tone of that one at the time. The newer ones haven't captured me as much, and they've made way too many TV shows, and I think they should chill with Star Wars stuff, because it's getting a bit excessive, just like superheroes.
4. Which character is your favorite and why?
I loved Obi-Wan because I wished I had a mentor like him, and I also liked R2-D2 because he's funny and cute.
5. Do you own/did you you own any Star Wars merchandise/collectibles?
I used to have some toys and action figures, and one year I got a daily calendar that was Star Wars trivia, and I had some books about like the universe and the lore.
6. Have you ever been to a Star Wars fan convention (or any sci-fi/fantasy/comic book convention)?
Not really been to any sort of convention, but it seems like people have fun with it. There's a fairly big comic con that takes place out near here. (We also have a big furry convention right downtown every summer. Not into furry stuff myself, but it's always fun to see people here in their fursuits, and I admire their dedication, not only because it sometimes gets really hot out, but also there's always at least a few people who unfortunately are judgmental about it. Plus it's fun to see all the different designs and ideas people have.)

Ah yes, i remember seeing it in the cinema. I was a fresh faced young -17 year old. :D I was born in '94, so i didn't get the chance to see it in cinemas when it first came out. It's hard to say when i first watched the original though, cos i was pretty young, so it's at that age when your memories are all hazy and hard to pin down. I definitely loved it though, cos i was a really big fan of Star Wars as a kid.

I don't think i'd really say i have a favourite movie (the original 3 are better than the others in my opinion too though), so i'm gonna be an awkward git and say a game: Knights of the Old Republic. I really love the the KOTOR games.

The Mandalorian War and the resulting Jedi Civil War are really intriguing concepts, and present a lot of in-depth character drama. It gave a lot of justification and interesting RP choices for a dark side character, and even the light side characters could be conflicted and empathetic towards the jedi who turned sith as a result of the war. And while i think KOTOR 1 is the better of the 2, i like that 1 focused largely on the Jedi Civil War and 2 really delved into the Mandalorian War and the events that went down on Malachor V. Plus it being a D&D style RPG let them explore things like the advantages and disadvantages of different lightsaber techniques, battle meditation, and one particularly cool dark side character who's so corrupted and strong in the force, his very presence drains the life out of everything around him.

I don't think the prequels are particularly good, and it sounds like the sequels are downright bad. But i will say that i don't think the prequels hurt the original trilogy, and they added a lot of cool ideas. Having general Greivous be a robot with 6 arms that fights with 6 lightsabers at once, like he's a sci-fi Il Duce was a really neat concept. And Darth Maul wielding a double-bladed lightsaber really opened up the field for all sorts of new and inventive designs.

Also gonna pick a character from KOTOR for this - Zaalbar. I love his interactions with Mission, where it's like she can't make up her mind if he's her best friend or her pet dog, and he loves her like a sister, and owes her a life debt, but wants her to pack it in.

Yeah, i was one of those kids with like 5 different lightsabers. I also had a Star Wars chess set. Yes, i know, i was very cool.😏

Nah, conventions aren't generally my scene.
