I am opening my first Cafe, with a special shout out to @JMG 😁

Today is Star Wars Day, so the topic will be....well, Star Wars, duh!

Here's a few questions, but feel free to post any thoughts, pictures, comments about the Star Wars universe and how this phenomenon has (or hasn't!) impacted your life...

1. How old were you when you saw the original 1977 film that started it all? Did you see it in the theater when it was originally released? What were your first impressions?

2. What is your favorite film of the series and why?

3. Did you like any of the prequels or post-quels? Or should Lucas have just stopped after Episode 6?

4. Which character is your favorite and why?

5. Do you own/did you you own any Star Wars merchandise/collectibles?

6. Have you ever been to a Star Wars fan convention (or any sci-fi/fantasy/comic book convention)?

I saw the re-release in 1994 I believe I may be wrong about the date, at the cinema sitting on my dad's lap (I was about 3) and I used to call Darth Vader, Mr. Star wars.

2. What is your favorite film of the series and why?

The Attack of the Clones, even though I know argumentivaly it is the worst one, I hadn't seen my dad in about a year (I was about 11) my dad has always being very poor, but he saved up all the money he could to buy me a plan ticket to fly to him and we watched it together.

3. Did you like any of the prequels or post-quels? Or should Lucas have just stopped after Episode 6?

I like all of them, except the Rise of Skywalker.

4. Which character is your favorite and why?

Anikaan Skywalker, it may sound stupid this, but in the prequels he deals with a lot of emotions he has no control over, I feel like that a lot that I may tip one day so I relate a lot.

5. Do you own/did you you own any Star Wars merchandise/collectibles?

I had all the toys growing up. I don't have anything any more though.

6. Have you ever been to a Star Wars fan convention (or any sci-fi/fantasy/comic book convention)?

I went to South Africa's version of comic con once, it was as shit as you can imagine .

takes one to know one 👽🛸 1620134599114.gif so consider my responses quite authoritative and please pay no attention to the few deficiencies that you may notice below.

1. How old were you when you saw the original 1977 film that started it all? i do not remember. i resisted seeing it and then finally happily did in 19xx. that would mean i was xx years old but if i say the actual number you might figure out that i’m lightyears old now.

Did you see it in the theater when it was originally released? nope nope nope! What were your first impressions? well before seeing it - i did not want to have any connection to such a thing. after - stupid me! why did i not want to have fun!

2. What is your favorite film of the series and why? the first one.

3. Did you like any of the prequels or post-quels? nope only because i did not see them. Or should Lucas have just stopped after Episode 6? i think it is a very fantastic thing that there are as many episodes as there are. had i been someone else i’m sure i’d have seen each. just regreting that i didn’t now

4. Which character is your favorite and why? kinda liked princess leia - she left an everlasting impression. i also like yoda (maybe i saw on tv later in life); chewie; r2-d2.

5. Do you own/did you you own any Star Wars merchandise/collectibles? nope but i worked in a theatre that was showing the original after distribution was expanded.

6. Have you ever been to a Star Wars fan convention (or any sci-fi/fantasy/comic book convention)? nope

I saw the the original movie in the theatre when I was ten. I could not stop talking about it! lol

2. What is your favorite film of the series and why?

Empire. 'Nough said!

3. Did you like any of the prequels or post-quels? Or should Lucas have just stopped after Episode 6?

I think Lucas should have stopped after Return of the Jedi.

4. Which character is your favorite and why?

Darth Vader! Awesome villain!

5. Do you own/did you you own any Star Wars merchandise/collectibles?

I had a few things over the years, but with my parents divorcing and both of them moving, all my collectibles got lost somewhere :(

6. Have you ever been to a Star Wars fan convention (or any sci-fi/fantasy/comic book convention)?

I only went to one convention with my college roommate. He got the date and time wrong so we showed up just as it was winding down. I did get to meet a VERY hung over Larry Niven tho lol

Thanks for this thread @LonelyHiker

1. How old were you when you saw the original 1977 film that started it all? Did you see it in the theater when it was originally released? What were your first impressions?

I'm not sure but I was a young child and I loved it. I wanted to be Luke, not Leia.

2. What is your favorite film of the series and why?

For the original series, I loved The Empire Strikes back. I hated the new series until I happened to watch The Last Jedi and enjoyed that. I haven't seen any of the other films although I intended to. I was always more of a Star Trek fan.

3. Did you like any of the prequels or post-quels? Or should Lucas have just stopped after Episode 6?

Don't know

4. Which character is your favorite and why?

In the original series, Chewbaca, because he was so loyal (hey I was a kid)

5. Do you own/did you you own any Star Wars merchandise/collectibles?

No.

6. Have you ever been to a Star Wars fan convention (or any sci-fi/fantasy/comic book convention)?

Years ago, I went to a Star Trek convention, a Doctor Who convention and three other SF conventions (once as a guest as I had published some SF stories). I also went briefly to some Star Trek club meetings. I did enjoy many of the presentations and panels at conventions. Unfortunately I was bitterly disappointed by the social aspect, as I found the conventions and clubs to be run by a core group of people who were mostly only interested in hanging out with each other and talking to each other about all the other conventions they'd been at, and it was their whole life going to conventions. I found it shallow although I did connect with a few of them and I think my expectations were way too high, but I was overall so disappointed that I told one of them I found the whole community not very welcoming (and she was one of the most welcoming people so I regretted that). Overall I was also shocked that there was so little discussion of actual science fiction, especially books.

Also when I was a guest, the con committee screwed up my schedule, booking me for too many panels and double-booking me. One of the most stressful experiences of my life.

I did deeply enjoy talking to some of the guest authors and actors, and especially the novelist Robert J. Sawyer who was very kind to me as a newbie writer, and who seemed delighted that I had actually read all of his books. His book Calculating God is still my favourite SF novel.

As soon as I see the title, I know that I know nothing about today's topic, except for memes. Well, I'm tagged so why not.
Besides, I'm not really fine at the moment, my mind is mostly suicidal thoughts.

How old were you when you saw the original 1977 film that started it all? Did you see it in the theater when it was originally released? What were your first impressions?
- I wasn't born back then so I cannot really say anything, nor feel anything. It was good.

What is your favorite film of the series and why?
- Probably none of them. The series has never been popular in the country. In 1977, my country was still devastated by the war with the US, and Western media was banned in my country back then. The reasons were mostly political.

Did you like any of the prequels or post-quels? Or should Lucas have just stopped after Episode 6?
- I don't know.

Which character is your favorite and why?
- I don't know.

Do you own/did you you own any Star Wars merchandise/collectibles?
- No
Have you ever been to a Star Wars fan convention (or any sci-fi/fantasy/comic book convention)?
- No, it sounds fun, though. Perhaps, one day when the pandemic is over.

1. How old were you when you saw the original 1977 film that started it all? Did you see it in the theater when it was originally released? What were your first impressions?
I don't remember how old I was seeing the first one, but I'm pretty sure I saw The Phantom Menace when it first came out, and I would have been about 6. I got really into Star Wars after that, so I probably wouldn't have been too much older when I saw the original.
2. What is your favorite film of the series and why?
My opinions would probably change if I rewatched them, but I was an edgy 12 year old when I saw Revenge of the Sith and that used to be my favorite.
3. Did you like any of the prequels or post-quels? Or should Lucas have just stopped after Episode 6?
I was young for the prequels, and I liked them regardless of the cinematic virtue or lack thereof. Now I'm kinda burnt out on Star Wars and haven't kept up with everything. I think it's a bit overexposed now.
4. Which character is your favorite and why?
I've always liked R2-D2 and found him funny. I had a cool Halloween costume of him one year as a kid. I also liked Obi-Wan Kenobi and when my sister and I would play Star Wars, I would be his padawan and she would be Qui-Gon Jinn's.
5. Do you own/did you you own any Star Wars merchandise/collectibles?
I used to have some little figurines and toy lightsabers and books and one year I had a daily calendar with like Star Wars pictures and trivia. Might have had some other toys too, idk.
6. Have you ever been to a Star Wars fan convention (or any sci-fi/fantasy/comic book convention)?
No I haven't, but that kind of thing always sounded like fun.

Here's a few questions, but feel free to post any thoughts, pictures, comments about the Star Wars universe and how this phenomenon has (or hasn't!) impacted your life...
1. How old were you when you saw the original 1977 film that started it all? Did you see it in the theater when it was originally released? What were your first impressions?

was born just a bit too late to catch the original theater releases, but had seen all three at home by the time I was 4 or 5, and I loved them. They’ve been my favorite movies for literally my entire life.

2. What is your favorite film of the series and why?

Empire Strikes Back, love the more serious tone, plus the whole “you-know-who is you-know-who’s relative” reveal scene.

3. Did you like any of the prequels or post-quels? Or should Lucas have just stopped after Episode 6?

I mean, they don’t stack up to the originals, but I don’t dislike them and can find good parts in even the least good episodes.

4. Which character is your favorite and why?

Han Solo. Wanted to be him. Has his own ship, cool best friend, and gets all the space-ladies.

5. Do you own/did you you own any Star Wars merchandise/collectibles?

Ha, I had a stuffed Darth Vader that talked and did the breathing and everything. Got a pretty good story about that thing, but it might belong more in the tavern, lol.

6. Have you ever been to a Star Wars fan convention (or any sci-fi/fantasy/comic book convention)?

Unfortunately, no.

I used to call Darth Vader, Mr. Star wars.
That is literally the cutest fucking thing I’ve ever heard.
