I went for my annual physical today. The group home manager (this is the new better one) was in the exam room with me. The doctor asked if I had any suicidal thoughts in the last two weeks and I said yes, pretty much every day. I told her I have chronic suicidality, have a therapist and psychiatrist and call the suicide hotline sometimes. And I told her I am really suffering. But she didn't seem to care and the manager didn't say anything either. I mean I guess it's good they are not locking me up but it almost seems strange. Does this seem weird? I kind of thought the doctor might want to provide a referral or something, idk. Or am I expecting too much?

I don't feel you are expecting too much in the least. 1) your mental health is part of your physical well being examination. 2) At the very least she could have encouraged you to follow up with your psychiatrist considering you blatantly told her you are really suffering!
It's so disheartening how much it seems we have to push for adequate care sometimes. Can you get in with your psychiatrist relatively soon?

Expecting help from doctors is not an error on your part.
Maybe the doctor is obligated to ask the question, following a scrpt - but not required to offer you feedback or other communication at the time of your visit. They might not know what to say to you, despite being a doctor. It's wrong, at least it is to me, for them to fail to communicate in the way you've described.
Well done on having gone to the physical - that's not an easy thing to do.

@Harmony Makes sense. I talked to my psychiatrist recently but she is being stubborn that she doesn’t want to change the meds. I might go for a second opinion at this point.

@seabird Yeah, that makes a lot of sense, I hadn’t thought of it this way.

@Dude111 I’d rather they know at this point so I can actually get help. And as much as I don’t like to admit it the last mental ward I was in was actually better than the group home where I live now. If you don’t mind me asking, if you haven’t told people were there other ways you found help?

No not eay at all.. Most of the times they commit you to a mental ward if you tell them you dont wanna be here.. Its like they are trying to force ppl to stay!!!

I think its better NOT TO TELL THESE PEOPLE!
it is better to tell medical professionals. in most cases they ask about suicidal feelings, if you say yes they usually ask if you have a plan or timeline. if you have no immediate plans most doctors will prescribe meds or suggest therapy. they usually will NOT put you in a place against your will unless you are in immediate danger
