I quit some where between 2006 and 2009 (I get so lost on dates now) after 15 years of smoking I was having chest infection all the time form smoking so took the plunge one day to quit put them down first day and half was fine the only issue I had was day 3 when I had some sickness but after I got a patch the next day that went off and it was easy from there its been not to say I dont think about from time to time but I get no major cravings

trust me if I can do it you guys can quit and stay

I know that some here may not believe it...but I am on Day 18 of quitting smoking. Doing the patch and Wellbutrin but admit the cravings are still there...sigh...but determined this time to make it stick...trying to think of $ saved and also think of myself as a non-smoker... oh why does this have to be so hard....
Sounds to be a fine start, wishing you well on that journey.

Thank you all...keep hoping that the cravings lessen but know that I have to give it time. Just taking one day at a time ... and hoping that by doing this I will realize that I can do what I put my mind to....so that will help with present/current challenge of impending termination and trying to find yet another job at 59...sorry for rant...feeling a bit on edge due to morning coffee without my regular companion ...

i feel your separation anxiety for morning coffee without it's companion. when i quit i had 3 bad parts to deal with. 1 was with coffee 2 was after a meal and 3rd was after sex. i hope your job search goes well, try not to stress over it.

Thanks for encouragement... yes keep going one day at a time with hope that cravings will decrease. And yes 1 + with morning coffee is probably the hardest, followed by before/after meals, driving, and before bed. So, am trying to not think about and just drinking water... as don't want to eat...

back on the cigs after 2 whole years nic free. goes to show you are always just 1 puff away from a full blown relapse. hopefully i can stop soon, but it's hooks are sunk in me good right now :(

i am sorry that you relapsed but you can quit again. be strong and try to set another quit date, the sooner the better. i stopped smoking 4 years ago. i know that you are strong enough.

Agree with @1964dodge...that truly quitting takes multiple times and have to forgive ourselves for relapses (as I know all too well). Also has to be the "right time" as well.. for me was husband's birthday and immanent job loss so helps with saving money as well as health benefits of course. But admit...know how easy would be to go back to it.....

Is it ok to post about quitting vaping here? I must not have sense in me, I didn't know that nicotine raises blood glucose. no one is going to believe this but i quit for 6 months (cigs), gained weight, and my doctor said I should go ahead and smoke, or the diabetes will kill me. He angered me so much, I was proud of quitting, he wasn't supportive and ever since then, about 7 years ago, I've gone from cigs to vape and sometimes both.

I wonder sometimes if it's worth the agony of cravings, I could keel over soon anyways. But if not, I'm starting to get diabetic neuropathy and I don't know if that's reversible either. I've been turning my vape off and just drawing on it, keeping it in my mouth to replace the habit. Sometimes I was vaping constantly all day... that had to be bad... any help is welcome if you know how, thanks

Do you think it's plausible that the act of stopping smoking made you gain weight, because you were eating to curb the cravings instead of smoking... and that's what has altered your diabetes more than the nicotine @toomuchreality

I vape, I used to smoke but I quit in autumn 2014. So nearly 8 years ago.

I've thought about quitting vaping but I do enjoy it and it's far safer than smoking. I don't drink alcohol or do any recreational drugs, I rarely eat sugar, I only drink water and I take my vitamins so, I'm gonna be happy with that. People have vices and I don't think vaping is the worst thing out there.

I had a chart not sure if i can remember it let me see if i can find it online i am at or near 20 years right now

20 minutes: Your pulse rate will return to normal.

8 hours: Your oxygen levels begin to return to normal, whilst nicotine and carbon monoxide levels in your blood decrease by over 50%.

48 hours: You should start to notice an improved sense of taste and smell. As nicotine levels become depleted, the side effects of nicotine withdrawal such as anxiety and irritability might start to creep in (don’t worry! We have tips to help you with that).

72 hours: Your lungs begin to relax and breathing should be easier. Nicotine is completely eliminated from the body and as a result nicotine withdrawal symptoms will have reached their peak.

5 to 10 days: The average smoker will begin to notice a reduction in the number of nicotine cravings experienced in a day (you’re getting there!)

2 to 12 weeks: Your circulation starts to improve. You may notice that physical activity becomes a lot easier. You’ll be free of the addiction and any psychological effects of withdrawal should have ended.

3 to 9 months: Lung function begins to improve markedly. Coughing and wheezing becomes less frequent and the risk of respiratory infections begins to decrease.

1 year: Your risk of heart disease decreases by around 50%.

5 years: Your risk of stroke is significantly reduced, as your blood vessels begin to widen again, making blood clots less likely.

10 years: Your lung cancer risk is reduced by around 50%, whilst the chance that you’ll develop cancers of the mouth, oesophagus, throat and pancreas is also far less likely.

15 years: Your risk of developing heart disease is the same as that of a non-smoker.

20 years: The likelihood that you’ll develop pancreatic cancer is now equivalent to that of someone who has never smoked. In females, the risk of dying from all smoking-related causes is also now the same as that of a non-smoker
