My mother called them blood oranges when we ate them in Greece. But these days in the US, the stores are careful about using the word, “blood.”
i remember many years ago when they were being ”introduced” (in america?) that on tv, they did call them blood oranges and also in the stores. nowadays i see them just being sold as $2.39 a pound or whatever or sometimes in a bag and it may be on the bag that the “romantic” name appears.

Probably depends on where you live.
Love blood oranges.
They still have the name on soda drinks and such others that produce soda blood orange

I still see it say blood orange at grocery stores
Doubt though it’s like that everywhere
Granted I don’t tend to stray away from my normal stores

I wonder what other fruit or veggie has changed it’s name over time

i can think of a bunch of “introductory“ fruits from over the years (too bleeping many years to count) but those plum/apricots that look so ugly on the outside but brilliantly red inside and deliciously juicy and sweet/tart. they’ve gone by the names pluot, dinosaur plums and some other names and speaking of ugly, what about uglies (the legitimate fruit kind). that’s a name to change. but they are ugly tangerine like fruit and also delicious and sweet. now kiwis are still kiwis but i guarantee that the fruit they sell now is something surely genetically manipulated to be whatever the pathetic mess they were manipulated into being. and if i only could, i’d be snacking on any of these right now - if i could get my hands on them. instead i’m eating cheddar cheese and sipping earl grey tea. but that is a whole nother story!

that was enlightening. good to know but i still believe the ones we get here have been genetically manipulated. anyway, my way of eating them - since i first had one - is to just cut them lengthwise into wedges. then eat away the inside leaving the skin. i’ve also eaten with the skin but it is true they are kind of fuzzy. anyway, in the early days when i ate kiwis my lips would start to bleed. but that was an ok price to pay for their deliciosity. it doesn‘t happen anymore. also i only love them when they still have plenty of sourness. once only sweet i hate them. i also think kiwis don’t taste good once whipped, blended, chopped or whatever but to each’s own. just a brief after snack thought…
