To The Wonder. Terrence Malik, I don't know what you're trying to do here? Well, I suppose I do - but I still don't like it! I enjoyed the lead actress & understand that you wanted to tell the story from her perspective & in flashback...but why did you have to use such a wide angle lens (or whatever you did to flatten everything out--in the frame?). And if you're going to cast a star, they're going to bring particular "known qualities" to the role. So in the case of Ben Affleck, thank goodness you had him play a statue or it would have been an even more boring and unbearable movie. I should stop right there because nobody's going to get anything out of this but me. I did like, however, when you had the lead actress constantly do her little ballerina moves spontaneously throughout the various scenes.
I remember when you released that New World movie with Colin Farrel. God I swear I tried to watch that four or five times and never made it through the first half hour. Why do I go to all this trouble? Do I expect too much for great directors, who once displayed endless talent? I'm probably the only person alive who liked Thin Red Line more than Saving Private Ryan. Now that was a meditative picture--I'm sure nothing of the same thing was being attempted here! And I can see why you had everybody in Hollywood lining up to star in your war movie from big to bit parts after not having made anything in close to two decades. Ah, but that is where you made your reputation off two critically acclaimed and well respected films: Badlands & Days of Heaven.
On second thought...maybe you're just old! In which case, you have my complete & unadulterated apologies-
