I've no idea what 80's ballad is!

You are possibly too young to have been around. Music of the 80’s. My teenage years. Bruce Springsteen, DuranDuran, Wham, the Bangles, Billy Joel, Simply Red, I was even in to Rush for a while. Culture club came to play at my uni for a prom gig.
Maybe time to go back and listen to some again.

My favourite 80s song was Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer. Also Dire Straits' Money for Nothing.
Also loved Talking Heads, Prince, The Police, Culture Club, Gowan, Springsteen, Robert Palmer, Eurythmics, OMD, Simple Minds, Pet Shop Boys, Run DMC, INXS, Depeche Mode, REM, Tom Petty, Fine Young Cannibals.

I had to check what 80s Ballads were. (Turned out I know a lot of the songs, but didn’t know they were called 80s Ballads or Power Ballads. I should be embarrassed…They’re from the tail end of my music era).
My confusion lies in calling them “ballads.” In English class (back a million years ago), I learned that a ballad is a song or poem that tells a story. 80s Power Ballads don’t necessarily tell a “story” per se.
80s Power Ballads are usually based in hard/heavy rock; might start off softer and build to the heavier sound; turn back to softer, only to build again…
I remember hearing the following song and really liking it…and being surprised because I didn’t especially like the artist or his music otherwise. This is a power ballad with a lot of “sort of romantic” emotion and a powerful sound. It fits both the kind of soft, but definitely shifting into heavier rock.
