Empathy and Advice Welcomed "Best friend" keeps asking for gifts, hard to move on

I have figured out my "best friend" is taking advantage of me. I barely see her anymore but she keeps asking me for gifts. Says I love her (platonically). But I know I don't owe her a gift if I barely even see her. It's just frustrating because I'm so isolated and don't really have a lot of people. But I know real friends treat each other well as an equal partnership and actually hang out. It's just going to be really hard to move on past this. I won't have anyone to share my secrets with anymore.

I'm sorry it's like this.

In some cases, there are people who like gifts on a symbolic level. Someone like that would be satisfied with a card or a dollar store item. In that case, they should also offer gifts as well.

There are also people who will try to milk their "friends" as much as they can.

Is it clear that she's one type over the other?

@may71 She seems to be the milking type unfortunately. She has acted like gifts I’ve given in the past weren’t good enough. And she rarely gets me gifts but always expects them.

Hi @cev77. Your situation reminds me of a friend I had years ago. When my kids were little, one of the parents of my daughter's friend would always ask me for favors. I snapped and said to her, "it seems like youre always asking me to do things for you". She cried. Figured the truth hurts.

I wonder if she is one of those people who can only relate on a transaction sort of level. That's draining for you instead of supportive and loving. Sorry it's happened.

It's tough to not have anyone trustworthy to speak to in real life.

We're or, I should say I'm here, reading and thinking about what you've said.
