Well, here’s my little 2 cents...
I agree – what’s wrong with just having a relationship with another human being? Through circumstance I won’t be having any children. But I’ve never felt that strong of an overpowering urge to begin with (though I do enjoy being with "little ones" and getting down to their beautifully pure level). Once upon a time, it would have been “normal” for me to consider – but life happened while I was busy making other plans… So – I’ve taken the philosophical stance and looked around me at the world.
My first beef is that we no longer raise children, but CONSUMERS (!!) – and the way the population has expanded, the earth can no longer sustain us and the damage we cause. This is in part, or perhaps MOSTLY, because we see ourselves as separate from Nature. Above and beyond, and “masters”, not stewards. This makes us more, well, like parasites upon the planet really – using and not giving back. No other species does that without contributing something, and we only take. All other living organisms manage to sooner-or-later establish a ‘balance’ within the complex web of the natural world. SO I’m kinda hopeless that we’ll ever get it together.
Secondly, the expectation to have children is something not necessarily natural but ingrained through a narrow-minded culture or society. Just look at how single people, instead of being seen as contributing their own self-worth and gifts, are fairly ostracized by not having the 2.1 offspring with the white picket fence et al. Moreover, single men are still called bachelors, while single women are spinsters, in other words, losers. Unworthy. Then, there is the number of divorces and the so-called normal, “ideal” (it’s an illusion) perfect family being ripped apart hither thither and yon, leaving damage scattered all around. Not to mention there are a whole lot of f****d up people who should never have offspring, making like rabbits cause it’s the thing to do – procreate. I don’t think we know enough about ourselves in the first place to be passing on our genes without a WHOLE lot of thought and consideration. But we’re not taught to do that – just ‘go with the flow’. Like good l'il Sheeples...
I think (though I also think it’s hopeless) that especially at this crucial time, we need to reevaluate our reasons for the things we do – as well as their outcomes and consequences. I agree that having children can and does expand our horizons, and our human selves – but I also think it’s NOT selfish to decide not to have children, but a conscientious assessment of our capabilities, and where our energies might *best* be spent – for the good of ALL - and that’s not something our human culture promotes…

*By the by, not to dredge up the appropriateness or lack thereof regarding any black humour expressed, but m'dears, child labour (forced) IS a reality (nightmare) in many parts of the world (as is child prostitution). Were these beings welcomed into the world with open arms, or made an expendable commodity. Think next time you gleefully find a "bargain" product made in a foreign country - or unwillingly have your eyes opened to the rampant prevalence of child pornography...hmmmm
