Dealing with friend's depression and my anxiety

I have anxiety since few years ago. I consulted to various counselors, though right now I'm not seeing any as I don't like my current counselor (I moved places that's why I have a new one). Aside from my counselors and few friends, not many people know I have anxiety since it's a bit difficult for me to open up to people, so many of my friends assume I have stable mind. My friends often said that I listen to people well, so they often tell me their problems.

So, my trouble is, the fact how I have anxiety everytime people consult to me about their depression. I have quite many experiences on having friends who have emotional issues lashing out to me, and that made me even more anxious dealing with people and get emotionally closer to them. One time, I have a friend who always talk to me about her emotional issues and her family problems, I didn't know the right thing to say and she ended up lashing out at me, making me felt anxious to the core. Another time is when I have another friend who felt depressed and talked to me about suicide on text and that time I was having a really important exam, I ended up having anxiety attack and didn't reply to her and I did very bad on the exam.

Right now, I haven't talked to those friends for a while. I didn't encounter those kind of situations, so I was fine for a while. But now, a friend who I've always been closed to but didn't know about my anxiety issues told me (through text) he broke up with his girlfriend. I tried talking to him that it will get better but he wouldn't listen. He's telling me he has been really depressed after breaking up, and recently he has been telling me he wanted to attempt suicide. I don't know what should I do- I told him to seek for professional help but he wouldn't listen. We also live far apart now since I moved, so I have no way of seeing him now. The last thing he said was he felt bad, but I felt really anxious I didn't know what to reply. I also have report due soon, and I still haven't finished it because I'm occupied with my anxious thoughts. Luckily he seems alright since his last seen is few seconds ago, but I'm still really, really anxious that I couldn't think of anything on what to do.

What should I do? I'm emotionally exhausted now, and I don't have anyone to tell this problem to...

It appears others' problems giving you anxiety and make you do poorly on your exams So maybe distance yourself from them, do not lend them ear until you are stable enough yourself that you can console them and at the same time be alright. Let them know you have your own problems, friendships are a two way street.

You could try to direct him to this forum if you'd like. Explaining the fact that you have your own issues going on might help.

Hopefully there's a way that you can be supportive while also taking care of yourself

The links in my signature have some information about treatment methods that might be helpful for both him and you.

Perhaps, you should distance yourself a bit with a negative thought. Its good to help a friend but it may only add to your anxiety.
