Feeling ambivalent. Went to a church gathering called create and connect where we decorated vases. The ladies there talked of their mission work and faith in God. I have to admit, I lean more towards atheism. However, I have been going to church bcz of the message at the Sunday sermons. Its a vibrant church.

The problem is I feel hypocritical, attending the create and connect and not being immersed in the faith. I dont really want to go back, but one of the ladies asked for info on Healthcare and I said I'd give it to her next time, so im obligated. This all has been weighing on my mind. Is it OK to attend this and church even if I have my doubts? I know this might be better in the faith section. Thank you.

I believe it is okay to attend. I attended church for many years before I finally truly believed. It is through church and the people I met there that I came to believe. Also, doubt is something that even believers can be challenged by. As difficulties enter our lives even Christians experience times of doubt. Our friends in faith help us overcome those doubts. I hope you will keep attending.

I think if people were honest, even staunch churchgoers have doubts. The church is there to help you grow, however that might look to you. I think it is fine to attend events even with doubts.

I’m probably going to need to call emergency services soon. The anxiety is too much. Sleeplessness. It’s that or it ends. So difficult to end things. Really is awful.
I’ve always wanted a built in switch we could just turn off. Always.
not looking for advice just venting. I wish we could escape this pain

I think it depends on how much the denomination focuses on damnation for all who don’t believe the same way they do. An us-vs-them mentality is going to result in intolerance towards non believers or even not-quite-yet believers.

There are other denominations where the focus is on how to help people as the NT accounts prescribe. I am guessing that the church in question is of the latter type because you mentioned feeling lifted up by the sermons.

In that case, I would predict that they would be even more happy you’re there if they knew you have doubts or are questioning. Further, I suspect that the proportion of people who are there almost entirely for the social aspect is higher than most people think. I wonder if you would feel safe participating in the faith conversations by starting with the fact that you hold a nuanced view and see where that leads. If they shame you, then you have your answer, but more likely they will be happy to discuss this, or something else entirely if that’s what you prefer.

What I’m most concerned about is that you don’t feel like you have to “hide” your real beliefs for fear of being cast out. This is a very effective way to develop debilitatingly toxic levels of shame. I know this from personal experience.

I’m all over the place right now. I’m starting to move forward on my job search and that entails facing the anxiety I have about my length of not being employed. I’m also feeling worse about myself every day because of the financial stress.

At the same time it’s a lift to be making any forward progress no matter how little. I am in the middle of a podcast where the topic is perfectionism and relationships. I have not finished it yet, but it’s starting to sound like this might be a sign pointing my way out of my feelings of self doubt and economic pessimism.

The ideations are strong.

Today, I'm regretting that a few years ago, I walked away from a method that fulfilled every requirement. I'll never have that option again, but death wasn't something I wanted then.
Also today, less desirable methods are coming to the surface for consideration. I'm not in immediate danger though.
The indicators of clinical depression are there, and then life circumstances have piled up also. My emotions are shutting down, I've been withdrawing and pulling inward. When I'm in pain or angry or confused, there's little input accepted, and little output offered, until I feel better centered.
I have an appointment with my psych doc next week, at the urgings of my sister and my therapist. I'm anticipating potential med changes, which I resist. I would prefer no meds at all, some of the negative feelings are blunted, but so is everything else, it all blurs into gray. I'm numb. However, the times I've quit taking meds, life got intensely weird. But not so different than what the past couple of weeks have been, so stopping them again doesn't seem consequential. It seems like an opportunity to escape from some of the side effects, some of which are a quality of life issue.
One of the ways I define myself is through creativity, when that's missing, there's not much left to offer, for myself or anyone else.

peace
