I lack advice, but the compassion part, I wish you well and that your decision you make is right for you. All the best for you.

Thank you so much!! I’m sure I’ll be able to get through this, it’s just kind of scary. But there are so many people that have gone through what I am going through and they are now living happily, and I’m sure that I’ll be fine, too. It’s just a little painful and nerve wrecking. :)

Glad that I was able to offer some words to comfort, and I have no doubt you are strong enough to be fine. :)

Thank you so much! Yeah, the main reasons for their hate is religion. My dad is more of an agnostic, though, but he still uses religion as part of his responding (but he also uses the “it’s not natural” excuse which...is just entirely wrong, to be perfectly honest.) I agree that they’re “brainwashed” in a sense — I’d be fine and not care about their religion, if only it didn’t hurt me and other people. Because when religion becomes oppressive and makes people fear for their lives/well being is when I think it’s dangerous. Yeah, haha, I feel like if people suddenly realized how using religion to hate others don’t a good/right thing to do, they still are going to try to justify it (although, maybe some people would just stop hating others, but I feel like that’s not the case).
Thank you for the advice! I’m planing to go to a college that has housing/a campus because well...I mean, it’s one of the only available options for me. But that’s okay! Honestly, any place is better than my household, really.
Also, thank you for telling me about the speech! I’ll try to find it online, I’m interested to hear it.
Thank you for your kind words. I’m a person who tried to stay optimistic no matter the situation, and even though I’m scared, I’m hopeful that things will turn out well for me! After all, if I just sulk and say things like “no, this won’t work!” then it won’t help me, but a positive attitude will keep me going and be able to go through this! : )
This site’s community is so kind and supportive, I’m really happy that I found it. I finally feel like I have people who are supporting me, no matter who I am. Thank you so much!!
I come from this kind of family and my father is a preacher. Your parents read fairly narcissistic from what you've said so far. You are completely correct about the way religion is used to spread and justify hate & condemnation and it's absolutely wrong. It's evil. Feel free to message if you want..if your parents are spewing "you are brainwashed by the left" you can pretty much guess they have been brainwashed by people who hate the left and you can ignore their thoughts on that. Many religious people simply use the bible and christianity to excuse their prejudices and embold them. I'm sorry for this. It destroyed me as well. Bunker down and make a plan to get out. You are lucky being young because safe houses for lgbqt exist for you. I didn't know about that when I was young or I would have gone probably.

Thank you. I’m not really sure if they’re narcissistic or not, but I do remember watching a video with a person who does have such parents and their parents shared an eerie amount of qualities with my own...maybe that’s the case with my own parents, but I’m not entirely sure. This gives me even more motivation to get out of this house, honestly. And you’re right, there are places that could take me in that help LGBT+ people who are in need — I’ll have to look into that, too. Thank you for your message. I’m sorry that you had to go through something similar...it’s scary how common these situations are.

Very scary. I should have written that their behaviour is looking narcisstic as you describe, not trying to proclaim their psychology off this post. Sorry for that.

Oh, it’s totally fine. To tell you the truth, I have wondered myself if they are narcissistic or not before, many, many times. I don’t necessarily want to say “yes, they definitely are narcissistic”, but honestly...just because they don’t show all of the signs doesn’t mean that they aren’t. I guess the only way I’ll figure it out is when I’m always from them for a long time, and I interact with other people more without their presence (when I’m away from them for a long enough time that I can see their behavior from another point of view).
I still deeply care about them, and it hurts me that this is how they behave/think. Although, I’m still extremely glad that I’m starting to question them and their morals now that I’m older. I don’t really voice those questions to them or have a normal conversation about how their behavior bothers me, because I know that they’d get mad and they might take away my electronics to ground me for months or something as punishment (I’m sure they’d view me questioning them as if I was “brainwashed” by the left. Yup. That’s their only argument that I’ve heard from them when I voice opinions that contradict theirs). That’s what they did when I was clearly depressed and in my most depressed state yet (in middle school), and honestly, I don’t see how taking away a person’s belongings that makes them happy (and actually distracts them from such horrible thoughts that depression causes) would help them in the slightest....it didn’t really help me. It just made me more stressed, but they think it helped me. My own mother even admitted to me that she could tell I was feeling extremely bad, but instead of asking me about it, she just called me lazy (as did my father) all throughout middle school. It also doesn’t help when they know I have a disorder which makes it hard for me to function without pills well, and makes tasks thrice as hard to do than someone who doesn’t have the disorder, they just keep calling me lazy when I’m trying my best but they just won’t accept it. It made me question whether I actually have the condition or not, or whether I’m really just as lazy as they tell me I am — to the point where up until recently, I agreed with them that I’m just a lazy person, when I’m reality I KNOW it’s not true, because I genuinely try my best.
Then they had the nerve to be surprised when I started valuing my scores over my mental health, when that’s literally all what they’ve been doing through my middle school years. Again, I can’t bring this up, since they’d just deny it and make up an excuse (or just say that I heavily misinterpreted things, saying things like “you should’ve came to us and told us” when I literally couldn’t since they yelled at me literally everyday for having bad grades and got angry when I made mistakes).
I’m really sorry for the wall of text — I just went off on a rant there. It just feels like a relief that I can finally voice my opinions about my parents at least somewhere now, instead of just keeping it all completely to myself.

I'm going to respond later. I got triggered reading you and now can't think to write. I got triggered because reading you is like stepping back in time twenty years. Holy shit you remind me of myself in this post.
Hey you are describing gaslighting. What is the condition, are they doctors? I'll write back more thorough tomorrow. I'm glad you wrote.

Oh, I’m so sorry!! I didn’t mean to trigger you, I’m really sorry, I should’ve put a warning in my comment!! You don’t have to respond to me if you don’t want to, I understand if you don’t/won’t. I don’t want to upset you any further! I really don’t want to make anyone upset. I’d rather have other people take care of their mental well being, than respond to me. I mean that.
They aren’t doctors, but I was professionally diagnosed when I was a small child (I think I was around eight years old). I have ADHD, which when it even goes medicated makes me lose focus kind of easily (I might be on semi-weak dose of meds though, which would explain why I have trouble focusing even when I am medicated). It honestly is extremely hard to live with, making everyday chores extremely slow to do since I keep jumping from one thing to another, and I literally keep forgetting extremely important tasks that I need to do because the moment that thought to do it leaves my mind, the next moment I remember about it is an hour or so before the deadline.

Hello everyone. Unfortunately, during the past year (and especially the last few months, my parents (especially my mom) have been making homophobic and transphobic comments. Some of them even border (and some don’t even border) on being racist. I’m feeling so much hurt and dread and pain in this place to the point of where I don’t even want to go downstairs to eat, just so I don’t have to interact with them. I thought that they were ignorant before, but just...I didn’t know that they were so...I don’t even know what word to use in this situation, to be honest. It’s been eating away at me, and I’ve been trying t avoid them as much as possible. It’s not like most of the time they are saying something hateful about a group of people, but because it increased tenfold than it used to makes me sick. I had a breakdown to my best friend today because I can barely handle it. I was also forced to tell my mom that I’m depressed, and she immediately started to blame me for being depressed and saying things like “what?! There’s no reason for you to be depressed!!1!1! It’s not like you have trauma!1!1” (which she wouldn’t even know if I did or not since I literally never tell my parents anything ever). This makes me want to run away. I’m trying to have as little contact with them as possible to the point of me skipping times when I’m hungry just to that I won’t have to encounter them again. I pretend that I’m just tired from school, but in reality, I’m just tired because of their attitudes towards others. It makes me scared, mad, and wears me out. They also both have anger issues which makes them start swearing and yelling with any minor inconvenience, and if I’m around, they start yelling at ME. Even though I literally do nothing wrong... I’m not even allowed to sigh because I’m their child, and that “clearly” means that I have to take all of this toxicity and not complain about it with a smile on my face (they didn’t say it like that since they don’t view themselves as toxic, but my father did say that I shouldn’t sigh when he’s literally swearing me out and yelling at me becasue he forced me to help him with his work (like fixing appliances and such), because I’m his child.)
I’m scared of what will happen to me. I’m not straight, nor am I Christian. My mother is pretty Christian and uses the religion to “justify” her homophobia no transphobia and she always compares the LGBT+ community to...well, to people who are genuinely horrible, alleys just say. It makes me want to run away so badly, I feel like I can’t even take it anymore.
Sorry, I just don’t really know what to do in this case. Some other context of my situation is: my parents want me to stay and live with them until I graduate college and get a full time job. That means at least 4 years of this nightmare, and I’d rather not do that.
So, my plan is to get a job and save up money, and then move out into an apartment against my parents wishes. Some of my concerns are, though, that I’m not sure when I could move out if I take up a part time job, I can’t drive, and if I’ll be able to afford to live by myself with only a part time job to uphold it all. My best friend said that maybe I’ll be able to live with her in the future, but she’s not sure. Do you have any advice what I can do in this situation, or maybe if my plan sounds good or not?
I’m just terrified and I feel trapped. It’s like a nightmare. I know hat others have it worse than me, but I still can’t help but feel so much fear and anger and dread....
Any and all advice is appreciated. I don’t mind compassion, either, because I’m in a a pretty bad place right now. Sorry for the long post.
I was put in foster care on account of my transphobic and abusive parents so I've been there. My best advice would be to not internalize it. There's nothing wrong with you. You are not alone.

I’m really sorry that you’ve had to go through that. I hope things are better now for you.
I have internalized it in when I was younger, but now, I’m thankfully out of that stage.
